Need help with HEI system - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

To make a long story short, I am buying a 72 project truck , but the guy selling it is having a hard time getting the truck to run, because his buddy updated the truck with GM HEI setup, and I think his wiring is wrong. I want to here the fresh 350 running before I will buy it.

Can someone tell me, which factory colored wires go where on the starter, the HEI unit, to the factory tach etc. I think they have the whole wiring mixed up. We need to know what wires go to what terminals?

One more stipud question. I do not know anything about HEI distributor timing. When you get an HEI from the junk yard, can you just drop it down the hole, or how do you go about lining it up to get it in to proper time when you install it? This may be the guys problem also.

What should he have done when installing the HEI when he changed manifolds?

You have to time it the same as points dist., #1 TDC or point the rotor button as close as possible to where the old points dist. was pointing to when you removed it.

What size of inline fuse do I put on the pink HEI wire going to the fuse panel (unfused location)?, And which prong do I put the pink wire to on my ignition?

I may have to go out and check tomorrow but I think I,m using a 5 amp fuse to the HEI. Also there is a 12V when the ign is on on the fuse box ,most of us are using that for the HEI 12v feed.
