Adding Power Steering

What is the easiest way that we can add power steering to the 67 GMC Suburban 2wd? Right now it is manual steering and we are in the process of installing a used 5.3 V8 out of an 04 Suburban. While we are in there we thought it would be a good idea to add power steering.

Thanks for the help,
Nick

Re: Adding Power Steering

I've searched for this power steering info. It looks like I have to just buy a new power steering box from a 77-80 C10. Just wondering if anyone has done this mod when adding a LS or 5.3L.

Thanks,
Nick

I did and I used the LS power steering pump and adapted it to the steering box. Mine was a '76 box so it didn't have the metric fittings on it.

You might get some info from this thread:

Thank you sir. What would this forum do without you.

I'll start the search for a 78 Steering box.

Re: Adding Power Steering

The PS truck boxes are similar from '68 until '87 or '91 for Blazer/Suburban.

You '67 from probably doesn't have the dimple in the frame to clear the box and most people use a spacer. This causes your pitman/idler arms not to be parallel with the frame members but unlikely to be a serious issue.

I do not know if your current steering linkage can be used. Many gain power steering and disc brakes when they convert the whole thing over from a later model truck.

Re: Adding Power Steering

Could the frame be modified to accept the box? As in have someone put a dimple in the frame or is that not an option?

Re: Adding Power Steering

Off Road Designs sells a frame repair kit for cracking around power steering box.

Perhaps it can be used to modify a non power steering frame?

Re: Adding Power Steering

There is a slim chance your frame may already have the dimple. My '67 did. You might want to confirm on yours before ordering parts.

Your existing steering linkage should work with the newer box. I originally converted mine with a box off an '86 3/4 ton with that pittman arm and it bolted right up. I did have the metric threads for the hoses to deal with, but I just swapped the bung in my P/S pump from the '86 and used the newer hoses. TX Firefighter did a thread on this IIRC.

Just my experiences. Hope it helps.

Thanks for the help. That is a good thread for reference. I'm looking forward to see if that new box works for him.
