My truck will not stay idling.

I recently bought a 1964 Chevy C10 short bed fleet side almost all original besides the drivetrain. I can start it and and i have to rev it to keep it alive. It's a 350 Chevy small block with a TH400 transmission. The wiring is awful but I don't think that it's affecting the idling issue. It back fires out of the carb also. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: My truck will not stay idling.

My guess is that the air/fuel mixture is to rich and that's resulting in the backfiring out of the carb.

After it warms up is the problem still the same? Is the choke plate closed when cold?

I can't keep it running long enough to get warmed up. The choke plate is closed when cold.

Re: My truck will not stay idling.

Did it ever idle smooth since you've had it? Have you checked the timing?

THere's only one choke plate. It's the front one. THe back one is the secondary air door. It's supposed to stay shut until needed.
You likely have no working choke, that's why you need to hold the throttle open to keep it running.
Take some pics for us.
We might see what your choke problem is.
