What would you do first!?
Hello All!
I am new to the old truck club. I bought a 64 last year and put some bags on it and am fixing up the interior. I really like the 67-72 body style also so I picked up a fixer upper! It needs a lot of love. I am looking for opinions on what to do first. It is my project/learning truck. I am not very mechanical but am very eager to learn. It has really nice patina on it. It does have quite a few dents in the body. Is it possible to fix those without taking away from the patina? Let me know your thoughts! Thanks |

Welcome to the best forum on the net. Nice LWB.
I would get the running gear in order first. Make it worth driving then worry about cosmetic's! Just my opinion, I'm sure you will get others!

^^ What they said. Check and/or change all filters & fluids. Make sure brakes are in good working order. Give it a good bath inside & out.

First off, ignore entirely what it looks like (except for basic cleaning stuff).
Spend all of your time on making it as bullet-proof reliable as you can. Fix bad wiring, fix bad brakes, rubber fuel lines, suspension, any of that. Then no matter what it looks like you've got a solid dependable truck. And you know what's worth doing cosmetics on? A solid, dependable truck.

Dave, you hit the nail on the head. I have for the past 2 yrs, as money was available, been doing brakes, suspension and steering, and just finished a GM crate motor install with just 500 miles on it so far. I did repair some wiring and restored the rear bumper. But now it's super reliable and this summer I hope to do floor repair and rockers. Have been enjoying the crap outta it to boot!

I have a priority order for fixing any vehicle:
1. Safety: Brakes, tires, steering, etc. 2. Reliability: Tune up, transmission service, etc. 3. Appearance/comfort: Anything else I'd like to have nicer that doesn't fit into category 1 or 2. |

Sell it, put all the money into the '64. Two projects at once usually results in two half done vehicles. Get the '64 done done, drive it. Then look for another project.

Thank you all for your input. I most likely will start with the basics. It does run but PO told me the brakes were shot so that will be the first thing to tackle. I have been debating doing small things as I go and leaving it drive-able. On the other hand I thought about stripping it down to the frame and go from ground up and learn as I go.
The only fear with that is that it will be one of those things that never get finished if I take it all apart. |
