Exposed gear under cab

While under the truck today I saw a gear that is exposed. The gear would be about under where the seat is. It is just a little in front of the drive train. The gear is looks to be about 10" to 12" in diameter. Will post pictures tomorrow when I have light. Ideas on what this could be? What cover needs to go on it?

Re: Exposed gear under cab

Mine is exposed to - need to get around to putting a cover back on it... just one of those things I'm correcting from the previous owner.
