4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

Hi everyone . I have what is supposed to be a 71 3/4ton 4x4 frame and the front leaf spring hanger for the rear leafs does not stick down from the frame very much . I didn't think much of it till I found a 70 4x4 in the junk yard to rob some other brackets from when I noticed those hangers stuck down farther with a stiffener on the back side . since then I have looked at a 71 3/4 ton 4x4 camper special that looks like even bigger hangers than the 70 . So just how many different types of hangers are out there and what do I actually have for a frame ?

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

Get the stamped VIN number off of the frame to decode it. Should be located near the power steering pump on top of the frame rail... or along the side of the frame rail under the drivers side door.

Your pics are probably too large and you also have to load them one at a time. Can't do multiple pics at the same time. You can load them all on the same post (up to 6)... just do them singularly.

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

The 2nd number you posted is a frame rail part number. ( Was it on the side of the frame rail ? ) the number your looking for would be on the top of the rail, you may need a mirror to see it if there's a cab on the frame. The other number would also be on the top around the steering box.

Pictures of the frame would also help.

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

B.W. yes that is what I'm talking about . my supposed 71 frame has the same hangers as your 70 chev and the ones on the junk yard truck are like your 71 gmc . the one in the junk yard has a 69-70 grill in it but no glove box door and I never thought of writing down the firewall vin at the time .

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

That's my guess, they're only a year apart, maybe it's a Chevy / GMC thing?

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

I have both a 70 Chevy rear leaf spring 2wd with the short springs and a 71 3/4 4x4 with the long front rear springs. I would look to see if the frame has been sectioned or the front front spring was bolted on to a two wheel drive frame? I have never seen a true 4x4 with the shallow rear springs. Just my opinion though. Their are others with wayyy more expertise.

Re: 4x4 leaf spring hangers ?

I think they were short trough 70 and tall after that. I don't think it mattered if it was 1/2 or 3/4 ton. I am not 100% on this...

Yep, sounds like the split is 70/71. Wonder why they changed?
