Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
Can anyone recommend a plating shop in the Orange County area. I want to have all my hardware zinc plated. Thanks for any leads.

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
The cost would be more and the hardware would be wrong. There are a lot of plating shops within 50 miles of me. At least 20. This morning I'll start calling them, some have a high minimum charge. That's why I'm asking for a recommendation.

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
For a buck a pound it'd honestly be worth shipping it to the east coast!

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
There has to be a shop near you. I'm using one in Sparks/Reno for the same thing.

The owner, Steve, is a car guy and will take smaller orders. He is near Fresno so maybe a little far for you. I send Steve my parts from Minnesota. Lee

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
That looks nice. Is that just a zinc plating?

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
I just got a bunch of stuff done in black zinc. $1.00 per lb with 75 lb minimum. I'm located on the other side of DFW from Shady.
If you send some things, make sure you clean it as good as you can yourself. My guy said they would get it clean as long as it doesn't have any paint. The acid will remove rust and old plating, but not paint. I cleaned my stuff really good even though he said I didn't need to. There were some things I wish I had cleaned better. I just took some more and made sure I had everything that was a flat surface brightened up with scotchbrite roloc. |

Not to hijack the thread, but anyone have pictures of yellow zinc under the hood, maybe undercarriage?

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
I struck out on local plating shops. They all wanted .35 -.55 per part with a $150 minimum for rack plating. I found a shop in LA that would barrel plate but at $3 per pound with a $150 minimum.
I ended up shipping 25 pounds of hardware to Arrow Plating in Fort Worth, TX. http://www.arrowplating.com I had to pull a lot of hardware off to get it to be 25 pounds. It was $16 to ship via insured USPS Priority Mail and I provided a prepaid return label. I think the plating will be $25. They'll let me know the total before they start. With the shipping, I'll be into it for $57 total. I'll post the results when I get the hardware back.

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
I could have got phosphate. But the black zinc should be more durable and corrosion resistant in the long run.

It's been ten days since you shipped your parts to Arrow. Do you have anything to report ?

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
Not much to report,
They received my parts and told me that they needed a week to get them done. They do the small orders as a favor to us car guys. They fit them in between commercial orders. $25 for the barrel plating and $25 for the rack plating. They'll be shipping them back by Tuesday. I'll post an update as soon as they arrive.

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
I have used them continuously for years. They have never failed me on a 5 day turnaround. They are reliable.
I wouldn't feel like you're imposing too much with the modest job size you sent them. When I was in there awhile back there was another of their long time customers in there that brings in a coffee cup size batch of parts pretty often.

Re: Zinc Plating Shop Recomendation
you can do it at home, vendors in the Shotgun news sell the kits to do all kinds of plating
also there are numerous editions of the Henley's fortune in a formula book out there and in it they also describe explain how to do coatings/plating |

Two different types of phosphate processes (at least). I need to find that link. One is oiled afterwards. The other, I believe, the oil is in the bath, or something like. It has more corrosion protection.
