getting down to the metal ( floor )
Getting ready to do some sound/heat proofing, heat mostly! Right away I've found that the carpet is glued to the carpet pad. The carpet pad is glued down to what appears to be about a 1/4" thick rubber which is glued down to the metal. There may or may not be some sort of coating on the metal as well, not sure yet.
Looks like this rubber mat like bottom layer goes up to about as high as the bottom of the A/C unit. I'm going to cut off a piece of it to get a closer look. It is starting to look like a PO painted some kind of sealant directly to the cab floor then glued down this "rubber" like thing and so on. If I decide to rip all this stuff out and redo it with known materials, what kind of cleanup of the cab metal is necessary to place down these vibration dampening DynaMat type materials? If it requires clean metal then I may just rethink the whole thing! -klb

This "material" is actually a very thin piece of metal ( probably aluminum as it's very pliable ) with a rubber like, non sticky coating on the "top" side and what appears to be something like black silicone RTV between it and the floor pan.
I can't imagine what benefit this is supposedly providing as installed. The stuff isn't particularly heavy so it's not pretending to be MLV and it doesn't appear to be capable of providing any sort of heat barrier either ( both the RTV stuff and the metal seem to conduct heat just fine ). Maybe, maybe it would somewhat attenuate the large panel resonation/vibration, but that's about it. What do you guys think? Ever seen this stuff or know why it's on my floor pans? Thanks, -klb

This picture shows the driver side seat belt mount location. The metal stuff is attached to the floor pan here very tightly with whatever adhesive was used to hold it down...

Well ... looks like someones attempt to save a few bucks , The "tin" looks like home depot heat barrier and the carpet is non backed roll goods . You'll probably see 2 seams sewn into the carpet at the corners close to the center hump . you would be better served by a full coverage layer of 40 oz jute carpet padding and a new set of mass backed carpets over the top of that . don't waste any money on the junk foil backed bubble wrap some sell as sound /insulation

Yep , seen it before they used caulk to stick it down . applied jute over it and slapped some roll goods carpet in .

It's your truck so do as you may but I'd be wondering if it's just there as sound deadener of hole repair ? jump under it and check for suspicious areas if it all looks good why tear it out ?

I've just about talked myself into taking the interior out and pulling the carpet/pad and see all of what is there. Need to install shoulder belts anyway so I've already torn up the driver side. A/C drain needs drillin' too... Would like to lower the driver seat frame...

Well, I've had trucks that were "repaired" with tin cans and roofing tar, expanding foam, and bondo. I'd lay new carpet and pad over it if the floors are solid, no sense removing it if it's working...

Just ordered ACC Mass backed carpet set from rockauto along with some double foiled juke product to put down under the carpet ( tru-max insulating mat ).
Guess it's time to start pulling stuff out...

I saved my 1965 chevy floor with dyno max on my floor My 1966 did not fair to well with the rubber mat over metal.Most guys go cheap on there thine matreal they use and it come back to bite them in the butt later

I've taken it as far apart as necessary and ready to put it back together. The old carpet and juke are gone. Going in will be the juke/foil combo and good mass backed, full carpet. The foil will extend as far as possible up the firewall and all along the floor. Probably will rattle can flat black where it is exposed.
All the hardware for seat and seat belt mounting will be replaced with grade 8 pieces and some use of backing plates will be done for more safety. Lap belts are being replaced with 3 point belts. The cab is lifted and ready to be shimmed on the driver side and all of a sudden it's starting to look as if the passenger side needs a bit of shimming as well! BTW, I found both core support mounting bolts finger loose, like they had never been tightened ( the threads between the nut/washer and frame were rusted ). My mysterious chassis sound/clunk has likely been found! Good thing is it can sit for as long as need be. Bad thing is the wife has stuff for me to do for the next week at least, so it'll be a while probably before I put it back together. Some questions: 1) Currently the lap belt reels out from the door side and connects at the other side of the seat. That receiver of the belt is mounted to the seat frame. I really want to anchor this to the floor, am I over thinking it? 2) What is commonly used to "seal" the firewall passage used by the brake master cylinder? I can see daylight through there.
