Newbie, Buying my first. 72 GMC K20

Thank you everyone! Its been a long couple of months. I guess I'll start this morning with cleaning her out, and later on when the suns out she may get hosed off. Also my Dad asked me this last night, should we run a fuel addative with this modern gas?

I don't run any fuel additive, but I drive mine every day. I seams that sitting with ethanol fuel blends causes problems. Others might have a better answer.

I Pulled the flat bed this morning, hitting 2 birds with 1 stone, I can now see the amount of rusted out sections of frame (Not as bad as I was bracing for) and now I can get frame measurements for a better flatbed design. I am going out in a little bit to pull the seat and see how bad the floor actually is, Still think ill put a new floor pan in it eventually Anyways. And yes it feels good to be working on her, im covered in mud,dirt and grime and I love it.

Bed pulled, cab cleaned out. Dig some digging and was able go use the camera on my phone to get a picture of casting numbers on the block, Found transfer case numbers and identified axles. She is a 350 v8, transfer case is theNp205, and I've got a Dana 44 front axle, and the rear is a Dana 60. The Dana 44 was standard equipment on all trucks? And research tells me that you could get an Eaton HO52 or the Dana 60. Still haven't found an Id tag on the transmission yet, My dad thinks its a th400. Its raining now, tomorrow ill go out and pics of everything. Heres a pic of her with the flatbed removed, about 20 some odd bolts and I rolled the bed of in almost 1 piece, couple boards broke when I stood on the bed.

If it's an auto and original to the truck it will be a turbo 350. These trucks never got the turbo 400 from the factory in a 4x4. Looks like a great start!

congrats on finally getting your truck home, I love those old K20's....also, if your rear end is big and round it is an eaton, with a removable third member

Chevyis a ho52 but gmc should be a dana 60. X2 on the 400. Originally would be a turbo 350. Pics would help us help you identify it.

I found some sorta Id numbers on the rear, C-30255, ill get some pics here soon, and ill get some pics of the oil pan and see what transmission it has. Also, any secrets to pulling the steering, or should I just go get the steering wheel puller? Id like to put in the new wheel Mr Terry sent me.

In reply to pulling wheel, please do not do the hammer trick. Do you have any pillars? A flat medal piece with holes where to threaded holes on the wheel and a nut on the top of the shaft. Tight down on the bolts evenly will pop to wheel up. I have done it using a short combo wrench

Unfortunately no, and if I tried the hammer trick, Id hit myself in the face. Ill go rent a steering wheel puller, I think its like 20-25$ at Auto Zone

Sounds like a good project, nice to have a K20, bit tougher than a 1/2 ton, can get some use puling whatever you want too.

Welcome and congrats on your new project. My first car was a 57 Bel Air in similar shape TH350 should be expected for the trans, that's the only automatic that came in K10/20 trucks - TH400 not a 4x4 trans option in this era, only came behind 2WD until in the later square years.

Thanks Y'all. She's gonna be a hard worker, Once she's built, Im hoping she'll tow a horse trailer well. Thinking about 1ton helpers in the rear and mounting a 5th wheel on the new flatbed.

I dont rent tools, if i need a tool once,I will need it again down the road, a steering wheel puller shouldnt cost more than $20.00 to buy

My Dad looked and there's a steering wheel puller at the Machine Shop, he's gonna bring it home this evening, If he remembers.

I think alot of us guys been watching this thread and waiting rite along with you, a few of us probably would have pushed it home by now

My oldest boy was 15 when we drug home his 67 short fleet.
It took us 3 years before getting it safe, legal and road worthy.
He washed dishes and scrubbed toilets at a restaurant for 2 1/2 yrs and put almost every penny he made into it of course alot of the bigger ticket items(motor,wheels, were either Christmas or b day gifts.
But in the end he still ended up with a $400 s10 dd that he also fell in love with.
But he did get too drive the 67 too his prom and graduation.
And he is still whooping on it now that he is 26.

Time and patience pays off, just don't lose track of your dream.

For now it looks as if you have alot of cleaning up to do.
A pressure washer sure comes in handy with that.

Just be extra carefull of what you do to it now ya might regret a wrong move one day.

And just to let you know we are all glad to see you finally get it home.

Thank you Midniteblues, and ill be right along the same, going to be saving every penny, Finding a little pickup so I have a daily driver when I get my license. Probably be a little 4.3 v6 s10.

On other news, pulled the tank and got it cleaned, I forgot to get pics, my dad might have some. Got the tank back in place and the bench seat back in. And My Dad forgot the steering wheel puller, I have to text him today and remind him.Going to work on the radio and speaker today, Gotta have tunes while im working.
