Here are some pics of a turbo Cummins Diesel a friend of mine is putting in his 3/4 ton 4x4. This is a work truck that will have a flatbed on it. He is going to lengthen the frame which will assist in his rear driveshaft issues. The NP205 is a divorced unit out of a Dodge truck. He is definitely going to have to do a body lift to assist with clearance. Going to be a very tight engine compartment to say the least.

Mark, you guys do all kinds of cool stuff down there. I'm really interested in how a guy would do that kind of swap. Are there computer issues involved? Is it going to be the body on the truck behind that frame.

Thats an earlier cummins and an auto

(. BUT sounds very interesting. I would like to do that to a jeep someday. Was the drivetrain orginally a 2wd since he has the divorced t/c??

Yes it will be the body you can see behind the truck. I can't recall but I think it is a 71 or 72 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 dually. The rear end is from a newer dually so it is a 14 bolt. Front axle is the original Dana 44. He is an incredible fabricator, I was drooling all over his crossmembers he has built and his motor mounts. That is a skill I wish I had. Not sure about the computer issues he is going to have to tackle. The motor and tranny did come from a later model Dodge.

This guy's brother is my buddy who has the 1970 1 ton that he converted to 4wd. I guess skill runs in their family.

I'm not sure if the Dodge that he got the engine and tranny from was originally a 4x4. I'm not exactly sure why he is going divorced. Is that auto tranny a good model? For some reason I was thinking he said it was a manual, but I know nothing about Dodge stuff.

Is he going to reinforce the frame? I hear that the cummins deisel is a tourquy motor and was cracking frames on the earlier models. These frames may not be able to withstand the torque without reinforcement. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

I agree with Wes 100% Even reinforced it may produce way too much torque for the frame.

It wouldn't surprise me if he does plan on reinforcing the frame, but I will mention that to him to make sure he has given some thought to that.

If frame re-enforcement is needed, and with all the fabricating, would it be easier just to use the existing Dodge 3/4 or 1T frame, motor, running gear and just put the good old chevy body on it????

The Dodge 4x4 will have a coil spring front suspension. It's not very well liked by most hard core Dodge guys.

hahaha, WOW to say the least. that is a thought I really dont think anyone I have heard of fathoming. he does seem to have quite the touch with the fabrication process. You kuntry boys are sure crazy. 800 torque would crack the frame? well then before I start adding in my turbo setup on my 454 I guess i should think a little bit of the frame, duhrrr.

Looks like a sweet setup.....i'm defenitly a fan of the Cummins diesel, i drove one a few years ago in a '01 3/4 ton 4x4 and i loved it. Gobs of toruqe!
I think it would be a cool swap into one of these trucks....makes sure to post more pics.

Both mine and my wife's daily drivers are Dodge Cummins short bed trucks. Stock is 555 lb/ft of torque at 1600 rpm. That may not sound like much, but the low rpm of the torque peak is the key. It's real easy to turn a Cummins up to 750+ lb/ft and still drive it every day reliably.

Tim left me a message saying the tranny is a six speed from a bus. I will call him and get more details. It is my memory that the truck he got the engine from was in a very bad accident and the frame is toast.

Here's the truck that I mentioned. It's a 1970 CHEVROLET C3500, 4x4 6v53 Detroit Diesel 6 speed Allison transmission 1-ton front & rear axels 1 ton suspension Dodge np205 transfer case.

I always thought it would be cool to put the 4 cyl cummins (4BT) in a 67-72 chevy truck , then add a Banks system to it . Better fuel economy and still lots a torque !!

Just wanted to clear up a few misconceptions in this thread:

That engine (or injection pump at least) is from a '93 or older Dodge (if it's from a Dodge). No real computer issues... maybe for the voltage regulator, and TPS for autos with overdrives, depending on the year.

That transmission (and thick bellhousing adapter) did not come out of a Dodge truck - don't know anything about it :p

Not all Dodge 4x4's had coil springs up front... 1993 and older had leaf spring Dana 60's

On my project (STILL waiting to get the cab back from the paint shop) I used the Dodge frame as I knew it would handle the stress from the mighty Cummins. It should be "done" within a month, and will look a lot like Yukon Jack's truck, except Hugger Orange with dual exhaust stacks blowin' black smoke

Has there been any updates to this? I have a 1996 12V cummins with 5speed that one day I would like to make it a donor truck for a 69-72 blazer! and I am trying to get information on if the firewall was modified. and the complexity of the project! So if anyone has any updates on this project or any other cummins in a 69-72 Chevy/GMC I would appreciate it.

For me having the manual and transfer case direct out of a dodge it may be easier to just use the entire running gear and I'll weigh my option on the axles (depending on what my goals are with the next truck!)

I think I read that some sugested using the frame from the cummins donor truck and placing the project body on it. but for me I have a a long wheel base extended cab pickup the cummins is in now...and the blazer is significantly shorter! (I guess the new frame could be modified and shortened...? Who knows! I am just getting started in my thoughts and it won't be in the near future b/c I have some good years left on my dodge right now!

Any help is appreciated!
