HEI Problems---I nearly cried today. - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

So I rip out my original points distributor, coil, wires, and resistor wire.

Dig the BRAND NEW HEI out of a box in the garage. (had it for over 2 years already)
Stick it in the engine, installed brand new plug wires, and spent some time cleaning up the wiring under the hood, and running a new wire for the HEI.

Well once I'm ready I hit the key....it cranks, but no fire....Hmmmmmmmm. I go over all my wiring, check it with a meter, all is well...still no fire. End up pulling the wires off the cap, and disconnecting the power to it. (key on...bad idea) Well I know the coil works!! ZZZAAAPPPPPPPPP!!!

So anyway after a couple of hours out in the cold, I figure out that the damn module inside is screwed.

I was so pissed because it is a brand new unit. But in all reality, is was more disheartened than mad. So I had to mess around and put that damn points distributor back in, so I could drive it.

Guess, I will find the new parts tomorrow.

the zzzaaaaaappp thing, i got zap, i was doign a rough timing with the truck running and one of the wires was melted and i got neer it and bam, i was about to start taking swings but i got into mind that i'd hurt my self mroe then i would to the block.

oh yeah, sh!t happens, module go bad if you dont use them for some reason

saw an old gm hei ad once "100,000 volts under the hood" damn those things can bite!!!

I have 2 spare modules I keep in the truck. Its a good idea to have a backup with these HEI's.
