205 Transfer Case

I have a 1979 Chevrolet 3/4 ton with a 350 and I'm working on a 205 transfer case and I wanted to know the following.....

On the rear output shaft should there be any slack in it because in my case, both the transmission and transfer case I can grab the shaft and pull it in and out about a 1/4 of an inch...is that good or does it mean the bearing has gone bad?

I have watched countless youtube videos and what not, but sure could use answer to this so I know what to do next (as far as part ordering and tools).

Thanks

Re: 205 Transfer Case

I don't think that's a good sign.

Does that mean the bearing is bad or the transfer case is bad?

Re: 205 Transfer Case

Zero play on the output of the T-case. Very minimal play on the trans like 10-15 thou.

Re: 205 Transfer Case

Let me be more specific.....

On the rear bearing, on the main shaft of the tranny, I had mentioned earlier that I could grab the shaft and move it in and out. So I went out this afternoon and I took the lock washer & the nut and I was able to pull the bearing out/off with my hand without resistance. I did not need a bearing puller. So again, is the bearing bad or the tranny bad?

Re: 205 Transfer Case

half the 205 cases i have stripped for parts or rebuilt the rear tail shaft roller bearing drops out or just a little drag . never a puller used .

there a stupid easy case to go threw and freshen up or master bearing over haul kit them . i had never done any t-case years ago and dove in to a 205 and was surprised how easy they are to play with .
