Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

After becoming obsessed with older Chevy's last year, I found a 1964 on CL and bought that. Drove it on occasion last summer. After being trapped indoors over the Michigan winter watching restoration shows and reading up on this forum I knew I needed a 67-72 model too. I found one on FB marketplace down in TN. I have a friend who went and looked it over for me. It needs work but I really want to learn (I am not mechanically inclined).
He put a deposit down for me and I made arrangements with a transport company. Picked the truck up for $800. Has new gas tank, dash pad, fuel pump but has a loooong way to go. Paid $450 for the transport.
I now have a 1969 LWB. It runs but needs brakes. I have so many ideas for this truck lol. just need to get started..... come on spring!

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I found her in Bishop, CA parked at the airport. It looked like she had been sitting for a few years. Had a lot of down time so it kept picking at my brain. The friendly people at the airport helped me get a hold of the owner and he accepted my offer. Owned her three years now. Pic is at the airport and then when done restoring.

My last K20 I got from my neighbor across the street, he was original owner. My current K20 I got from Livrat here on the board, he had it for around 30 years.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I've read quite a few of these posts so here's mine. I had been itching for a project for a few years now. I would always peruse the local classifieds here. Last August I saw this truck that was a 69 LWB 454 4 speed that wasn't running, and the owner just wanted to get rid of it. It was parked on the side of the street and was advertised for 1600. Still a deal but I thought I'd try to talk him down. I offered the guy 800, which he called his sister who owned the truck to talk to her about it, and to my surprise he agreed to the price. I paid to have it towed home, and over the next few months got it running, and rebuilt the Differential with 4.10 gears and a Yukon gear limited slip. It was a blast to drive, but now I'm saving up to redo the engine with intercooled Twin turbos (76mm) and heavily ported 049 heads. It's parked right now due to hydro locking the cylinders. Apparently the previous owner didn't put sealant on the intake gasket. uggh I didn't know this and should have checked.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I had a 70 SWB project that was going nowhere. I was always looking on CL and saw my truck. I knew who the guy was selling it. He was a local guy always flipping trucks. So I paid him a visit and we ended up swapping.

Some of my friends said I was crazy swapping a shortbed for a C/20, but I wanted something I could actually drive, and this truck was clean, it ran, and had no rust.

It's been about ten years now, and I don't regret it one bit. I love that truck.

When I got it.

Later.

And now. I really need to paint this thing.

From Oregon
Had lots of cow dung flipped up from the tires!
The owner hauled it to me at half way point, I drove it home... to Idaho

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I bought mine in February of 1997 from the original owner. When I told him I only had half of the$1500 he wanted, he let it go for $750 and made me promise him I'd take care of it. I was a dumb teenager with no intention of doing anything but running it into the ground. One has to remember these trucks were not popular back then, it was just an old farm truck. One year led to another, then another and 20 years later it is still my daily driver with just shy of 500k miles. She's been a good truck and I've had it more than half my life, I don't know what I'd do without her even though she's a borderline basket case.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I think most of this story is in my thread in the 4x4 builds section "just a few plans for my 72 swb 4x4" so ill make it short...
When i was younger, maybe 10 or so I worked my dads farm and mostly every joining
neighbors farm. I worked cattle, hay and tobacco for them, and I actually was in and out of (now my) pickup at times!! I always LOVED the truck and had dreams of owning one just like it someday. It was his daily driver. He bought the truck in the very early 80s. He Traded his green and white 66 short fleet bed for it because he needed a 4x4. I inquired about the truck many times through the years with no luck.. He quit driving the truck daily in the late 90s or early 2000 when he bought a new pickup. Again every year or so id stop by and ask about it.. I have had a few of these trucks but this one always had my heart.. Finally about 3 years ago or so I made a deal with him and drove it home.. Now i drive it daily unless the roads have been coated with the nasty chemical that eats a vehicle down to its soul !!! So here i am with the very truck that made me a fan of the swb 4x4 chevy... It will never be for sale unless my family is in need and theres no other alternative... I could have made a fortune on it many times already, but i just say nah its happy where its at

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

Went out one Saturday morning to go check out some Chevy pickups for sale. Was sitting at a gas station waiting for a response on a 74' C10 about 40 miles from home. The owner said he would send me the address when he got home in ~5 min. An hour or so later after receiving no response I figured he changed his mind and pulled up Craigslist on my phone. Saw a listing for a 71' C20 one owner all original for $2,500 local. The listing had no photos but had just been posted about an hour or so earlier so I figured I would go check it out since the 74' decided not to respond. Pretty happy he didn't respond. Ended up being the first one to go look at the truck. Belonged to the seller's father who bought it brand new in 71'. Had been sitting since 08' when he passed away. Offered him $2,000 cash in hand and bought it that morning. Wired up a fuel pump and did some work to the linkages and drove it home the following day. Thought I was gonna spend the next few weekends looking for the rite truck, ended up being the first one I went and saw.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I bought my 69 SWB from my best buddy of 43 years a few months ago. We met while our fathers were stationed in Italy. My buddy started the resto a few years back and decided that he didn't want to finish it. We haven't lived in the same state since returning stateside, but have always remained buddies. ,it will be cool to have a truck that both of us have contributed to the restoration.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I probably mentioned my 71. 1989 on a small car lot. I didn't know what I was getting, nor what I had until tear down.

As for the 72, which has been over a year now, it's nothing I'll admit to. No but seriously, it was a very odd situation, and to this day I don't understand why. To make things more peculiar, a nutty beautiful woman asked to buy it for me. Or maybe it was she bought it, changed her mind and sold it to me?...Either way it was meant to be. So much so the license plate freakishly reads "400". What are the odds considering the last three characters are made up of letters and/or numbers?.....................................Truck was the bomb back in the day. Now it's just a rust bucket I like to drive.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

On my way home from a camping trip to Otter lake, my wife saw the truck and said "there's your truck" (I always wanted a 67-72 K10)...at the time I had a '62 C10 that I swapped in a LS 5.3 4l60e..put the '62 up for sale and then went and bought the '72 K10. Since LS swapped it as well.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

It found me! I worked for my Father for about 15 years and every once in a while I would ask Him when He decided to get rid of the truck I would like to buy it. When He decided to retire He gave me the truck at Christmas...Nice surprise for me...I call it BUD, my Fathers nick name. Not flashy but it is a strong reliable truck that I am able to fix my self.

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I had owned a 1970 K-10 about 30 years ago, and regretted ever selling it, drove a number of Suburbans thru the years. I have always watched for 67-72 GM trucks.
Last year I decided to find a clean one, I looked locally, then expanded my search to the south and southwest. I found my truck on Craigslist in Pueblo Co.
It is a 3 owner GMC Sierra Grande 2500, 133" wb, 402, 4speed. The truck was ordered new by a drag racer to pull his race-car, it spent it's whole life in Southern Colo. It was the original owners baby according to the seller.
I was hesitant to buy a truck sight unseen, but the seller was a mechanic who loved these trucks, he gave me an honest assessment of the condition, sent me many pictures. He seemed to be in no hurry to sell the truck, and I figured out later he was feeling me out as well, because he wanted it to go to a good home! I spent a couple of weeks corresponding back and forth, and made an offer that he accepted. My son and I took a road-trip out to get it last Feb.
I have been very happy with it, and have decided to keep the paint original, warts and all. My plans are to find some steel wheels and hubcaps eventually. The wheels and tires on it are new, but not really my style.
Greg

Re: Where/How did you find your Truck ?

I bought my 72 K20 long stepper from the original owner's son back in 1991. His father owned oil wells in the Eastern KY mountains and used this truck to climb around the mountains visiting his wells. I drove it regularly until I decided to restore it in the late 1990's. After almost 20 years I'm getting close, it's in the body shop for its final paint so hopefully I'll soon have a nice new picture for my avatar!

Mine is quite a winded tale so I'll try and make it short. I was searching for a 72 blue Chevy one afternoon in an adjacent town, but was unable to find it based on my friend's directions. My wife and I took an abnormal route home and coming down a back road Farm to Market highway, I spotted a green 72 GMC next to a farm house. I decided to stop by and inquire. It was a farm truck for several years and most recently the daughter had driven it. The husband wasn't home so I left my number with his wife and carried on.

A week later I bought a '68 Chevy 396/400 truck. That project preoccupied me for a while but I ultimately sold it. The very next day after selling the '68, the owner of he green '72 GMC called me. Unlike the '68, this truck drove and ran. When he told me the price (only $500 more than what I sold the non-running '68 for) I immediately committed. We met at a small town in between and exchanged money and title.

I'm in the process of swapping a 5.3 into it as the crate 350 unit was pretty tired. It's been a great father/son project so far that I'm hoping to have completed this month. I should have a build post up in the near future.

I liked the worn barn look but the fresh new look with those rims is much better! 67 small window, short fleet?, doesn't get much better in my mind. Good job! Not to high or low. Keep on posting!
