NOS tailgate question
After 50+ years being stashed in somebody's garage rafters, this turquoise beauty recently made it's way to mine. Clearly never used or retouched, this gate shows some crackling seam sealer above and below the center panel, which I've never seen before.
It occurs to me that every truck I've ever owned has come from a west coast plant (Los Angeles, or Fremont), so perhaps this is another Midwest or East assembly plant specific detail. Who out there has an original gate that shows these beads of sealer, and where was your truck made? Any known original Fremont trucks have it? |

Re: NOS tailgate question
I bought a new tailgate in 1987 from the dealer I worked for and it did not have any sealer on it... its obvious yours was applied before painting...maybe done on assembly line who knows I will have to check my original for any traces of sealer. its also possible that maybe be a replacement gate for a truck that was rear ended when fairly new and the sealer was something a body shop did.

Re: NOS tailgate question
That's a twin to the one I sandblasted for my truck, I believe it had sealer on it too, very nice gate.

Re: NOS tailgate question
I currently own 4 Fremont and 2 St. Louis built trucks and have owned several others that I have sold and have never seen this sealer on any of the tail gates.

Re: NOS tailgate question
I never took any close ups of it as I assumed they were all like that but you can see pieces of it have fallen off.

Re: NOS tailgate question
My 66 C10(St Louis) and 66 C20(Flint) both had sealer at same spot, as I had to dig it out for a repaint.

Thanks for the response. Hard to see a full pattern with minimal feedback, but to me it looks like this was only done at some plants (never at Fremont, CA) and perhaps just in 1966. |
