Coverlay install question
I bought a Coverlay dash cover. The PO had tried to recover the dash himself, with comical results (see pic).
I really like the look of the Coverlay and I'm getting ready to install. But the current vinyl cover is folded in a couple of places and a bit bulky under the cover. I am able to peel it off and be left with the foam padding intact. It might be better to install the cover over the foam so it would conform better, but I have not done it, and once you glue it, I assume you are pretty much "stuck" with it. Has anyone installed one and if so, has anyone done it over the foam? I did attempt to contact the Mfg, but they are closed for the day. They are very good about answering questions, but I am curious if anyone else has done this?

Re: Coverlay install question
My dash pad was screwed down on the right side in 4 places. Is this the way it normally mounts?

Re: Coverlay install question
got one in my truck...works and looks good...I'd strip that garbage off...the coverlay only contacts the old dash in a couple places. .read the instructions. .it shows you where to put the silicome adhesive...

Re: Coverlay install question
After a little research it seems the 4 holes on the right side are normal. But the Coverlay does not have any holes in it, so I guess once it is on there is no removing the dash pad again unless you break the strip on the bottom?

Re: Coverlay install question
Yes the 4 screws on the right side is how it is supposed to be. I have never used a Coverlay but I did replace my old dash pad with a new one. The new one had 4 rectangular indentations for the 4 screws just like the factory one. You put the dash pad in and get it lined up and when you are happy, you use a pick or an awl to make the screw holes in the pad itself. Perhaps that is how you also do it with the Coverlay?

Re: Coverlay install question
I did not install a Coverlay but I did install a competing brand of stick on cap. It was a disaster, though installed per mfg instructions. In HotZona 110+ degree heat it buckled and cracked all over the place. I had to remove it (and it took a lot of good foam and vinyl with it) and will be attempting to have a local upholsterer recover it. It might work in a nice cool climate like TX, but not AZ.

Re: Coverlay install question
Never heard anyone describe Texas as a "nice cool climate" but I will take it from an Arizonian... you guys are NUTZ!
Did a test with the glue on the crappy DIY vinyl the PO put on my dash. It peels right off. So that will not work, not even gonna try. Will contact the Mfg tomorrow to see what they say. If I have to return it, I will also call an upholstery shop. However, Coverlay guarantees the dash against warping or breaking for the life of the vehicle. Can't speak for the other companies that make caps.

Re: Coverlay install question
Why not just get a new dash form Cheyenne Parts or USA1 Industries. I realize they are more money, but it sure would save you all the aggravation of the work involved. I have seen more Coverlay installs that look like crap vs. one that actually turned out good.

Re: Coverlay install question
That idea is what I am considering. I may have to return the Coverlay and just go for the real deal. A shame though. I think the Coverlay would look real nice... if it worked for me.

Re: Coverlay install question
FWIW, the dash I got from Cheyenne was awesome and came with the clips already installed. A breeze to put in, and improved the interior of the truck 100%.

Re: Coverlay install question
Personally, I would not install any plastic dash pad, even one that is all plastic. I think the metal frame of the original dash makes it worth a shot for recovering, and I will be trying that at an upholstery shop.

Re: Coverlay install question
Has anyone ever paid an upholstery shop to recover a dash pad? Was thinking black leather with French seams would be sexy.

Re: Coverlay install question
A custom would be nice, but I received and installed my Cheyenne dash pad, and it is BEE-YOO-TEE-FUL!
Once I am done with interior I will post pics.

Re: Coverlay install question
Did your cheyenne dash drop right in? I got one that I believe was made by Dashes Direct a couple years ago - the install took many hours as it fit pretty poorly - had to cut a lot of material away to get it to sit flat on the dash and run a screw into the drivers side of the dash as it wanted to flare out.

Re: Coverlay install question
It just slid right in, no trimming, no hassles. Came with the clips already installed. Actually it was one of the easiest jobs involving my interior refurb.

Re: Coverlay install question
On mine (89 V3500) it didn't like my drivers side speaker. I had to modify the speaker mount. Other than that it was a easy installation and looks great. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. They cost a little more but in my opinion it's worth it.

Re: Coverlay install question
Yep. I am a notorious tightwad, and normally it works out, but occasionally, I "lose money by saving money".
The Coverlay is a great product if you have a stock, beat up dash. Looks good, easy install. But in my case, the dash had been recovered by a non-pro, and it looked like sh*t aside from making it unable to accept the Coverlay. I should have known this and gone with the Cheyenne dash in the first place. Would have saved me on return shipping... Live and learn... or not... heh heh.
