1968 Camaro steering wheel install
This is up there with one of the most enjoyable changes I've ever made, certainly so for the ease of install: the 1968 Camaro walnut steering wheel.
If you're steering wheel shopping here are a couple of notes that may be of use: this wheel is almost 1.5" smaller in diameter than the stock wheel; it's actually a deeper dish than stock '72 truck wheel, but with the smaller diameter means it offers roughly the same driving position; the rim itself is thin, just like the original truck wheel; the walnut is faux, just like the original Camaro. Best of all, the 1968 Camaro wheel is truly a bolt-in change. This wheel is from OER. |

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
That looks great. That's a popular steering wheel swap, although most did the comfort grip. Now that they are reproduced it's practical to use the rosewood wheel.

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
Both wheels look great. Seems like the dish puts it a little closer to the ol gut though, and "some" of us need all the room we can get =)

When I measured the dish of the Camaro wheel on the workbench I was immediately like, "uh oh!" But there's more to positioning than dish alone and the decrease in diameter over the stock truck wheel helps in this regard. I find it to be a bit roomier than the stock wheel because the bottom of the wheel isn't as low, and yet with the dish it is still as comfortable to steer with my thumb and index finger at the 9 o'clock position and elbow on the window sill. (If that makes any sense?) |

Mine is from a 60s Vette but same principle, however, being a GMC, I opted for a Corvette center cap. Nice upgrade!

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
Yes, the 67-68 hub perfect. Not the 69 which is for a column with ignition lock and the adapter is larger diameter.

The 67-68 Camaro hub matches the diameter of the truck steering column. The 69 Camaro hub is a larger diameter.

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
From what I remember the standard Camaro and Corvair wheels the hubs are made to them you don't take them a part. Pictured is a Corvair standard wheel which basically is a Camaro wheel.
The 67 Chevelle wheel is alo 1 piece. This one is in my 71.

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
My truck came with that wheel when I bought it 7 years ago. Now that I am starting to drive it, I had to swap out the wheel with one that didn't have the 4 1/2" setback. I am one of those who needs a bit more room due to being 6'4".
I now have one of those wheels sitting around that I can't use.

This was the reason for my post. The three prong wheel is a opitional steering wheel for a Camaro but it's not the standard wheel that came in them. Yes I agree the one the OP shows does come a part. The hubs are basically the same but some small minor differences are noted on other forums. Horn springs locations and turn signal cam differences also.[ Depending on the site you order from to is a guess as to if it will work are not. I have several hubs that work on my SS Impala that will also work on my trucks. But I have to change out the horn stuff. The wheels pictured has a Corvette hub which is correct except it's a tad bigger diameter than the column.

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
Hi bMR, did the OER steering wheel work with your stock horn assembly? I am having difficulty fitting the stock horn assembly in my 68 c10 onto the OER steering wheel's horn button. Any suggestions?

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
The Comfortgrip wheel has less dish than the faux wood wheels I think. I have the Comfortgrip wheel in my 69 Camaro, my 69 short step, and in my 79 CJ-5. I think they look great, feel great, and work so much better than the crappy aftermarket horn setups.

Re: 1968 Camaro steering wheel install
bMr, I just bought the R6532 steering wheel kit from OER. Is that the same wheel you used? How is the wheel holding up? Do you have anymore pics of the the wheel in the sunlight? Thanks Trevor
