best posi??
I currently have an open rear in the back of my truck but would like to go to a posi or maybe a locker. From what i have gathered i would not be able to drive on the street easly with the locker. so right now i am leaning twords a posi but i have cooked 3 posi's in about 2-3 years and 2 were straight from gm and one was a jasper rebuilt. so i am looking for somthing that can handle going to the track every weekend and doing a nice burnout and still hold up for a while. the main reason i was leaning twords a locker was because it can handle the abuse of the track.
has anyone used an Eaton posi? what do you think of it? Has anyone used an Auburn posi and what do you think of it? thanks a lot Rat

I bought my Eaton frpm www.tomsdifferentials.com for $280 and have been very happy with it. I don't think Auburns are rebuildable.

I granded an Pro-Auburn Posi, it was a nice and tight posi but it didn't last long..
Dana Power-Lok is what you want. It is as close to being locked without being locked. It is a rebuildable unit too. You can add or remove clutches to get a 'custom grip' if you like. They are not cheep. www.differentials.com I run them in front and back, great posi!! Good Luck

eatons are rebuildable, where as auburns are not. if you can afford it, try going with an ARB Air Locker. great setup. a friend of mine had one in his mustang. 450 hp with about 475 ft/lbs of torque. withstood numerous burnouts. i recommend it

Rat those posis you cooked where they from 67-72 trucks? I was just wondering because i am in the same boat as you. I was told that the car posis are stronger than truck posis. Do you know if that is true? Manny

The Moroso Brute Strength is a very good posi, its a tight packed posi also, more for racing than the street. I had one in my 66 Malibu 12 bolt and it did ok on the street though. You can definately tell its a posi to and how tight its set up. It has extra springs and clutch discs added and the case is very strong.

Try summit racing, or Jegs on the Moroso unit....they might be a little stiff for street use tho(twice the spring preload as a stock type eaton). I run a rebuilt factory eaton in my 12 bolt, & it does ok for street use. The new eatons run carbon fiber discs, & can be had about $100-125 cheaper than the Moroso unit. Good luck, crazyL

Jegs ans Summit both carry them, they only list the 12 bolt car but they also carry the truck 12 bolt and car 10 bolts.

there is a product called powertrax that replaces the spider gears in a open diff. with a spring loaded deal that loocks both axles like a posi. you don`t even have to set anything up just follow the directions.the summit part number for a 12 bolt is PWT-92-0788-3005. it just says 12 bolt, doesn`t say car or truck but it`s a place to start.

i was thinking about the powertrax untill i talked to a few guys about it and they said it loads up and releases around turns and makes a loud noise each time it does that. for the price it seemed real nice but now i am leaning twords a posi that is more streetable. Right now i am kinda inbetween a moroso and a eaton. both seem nice and about the same price.
Thanks everyone Rat

if you go with a posi, i would get the moroso posi. 2 of my friends have them and they have been going for almost 10 years each and no problems and still very tight. i`m going to get one for my 70 when it`s time to build a rearend.

I've heard that the rear ends in 88-98 trucks are a real weak point. I know several people who have ruined them, and they seem a little hard to find in junkyards.

I am running a 12 bolt eaton posi with steel clutches and so far, with over 400hp in the truck it has not even budged.
I think it has alot to do with the steel clutches and the amount of pre-load you put on the unit on installation. |
