1964 GMC rear brake Dana 44 *Help*
I recently purchased a 1964 GMC with rear leaf spring suspension. After going through the truck, I realized that their are no rear brakes on this truck. Am I screwed? I have read topics on the Dana 44 rear brakes on this site for hours. The problem is, all I have are backing plates with nothing else. Is there a loaded drum brake from another truck I could use? Am I better off swapping the rear end out of a Chevrolet and dealing with the mounting? Thanks in advance. Any direction will be greatly appreciated.

Personally I would switch the Dana 44 for a 12 bolt. That way you have much better parts selection and availability.

Re: 1964 GMC rear brake Dana 44 *Help*
The Dana 44 is the most common axle assembly in the US, found under everything from ‘53 Studebakers to Vipers and Corvettes. They’re still used in production vehicles today.
Take-out Posi units from jeeps make these an even more attractive rear end. Drums Shouldn’t be too hard to find: just look under every GMC in a junk yard—you’ll find serviceable drums, if you can’t buy them new.
