Starting on the Right Foot
Good morning all. I have been wanting a 1960-1961 chevy apache truck for sometime now. I just recently came across one available at a reasonable price but have some questions. The seller is claiming it to be a 1960 chevy 1 ton truck with a 327 and 4 speed trans. By the limited pictures it definitely looks to have the front end of a 1960-1961 apache front end. There is no badging but the presence of dually tires in the back and claiming to be a 1 ton makes me assume it is an apache 30. Everything i find though doesn't support a 327 being an option in this year truck. I plan to ask him for some more photos and the vin to verify a few things. The truck does look to have a fair amount of surface rust and the bed is missing. Any specific questions or photos I should ask for? I am new to the older chevy truck community but I have owned and restored my 1982 corvette over the last 10 years.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
As I recently found out, those were all cab and chassis pickups so most of the beds have been removed. The Apache 30 I just picked up has an in-line 6.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
I have documentation on '61s, and the C30 was available with the 235 I6 or the 283 V8.
But a lot has happened since 1960 - no guarantee that it's original.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
The 327 wasn't even introduced till 1962 , meaning there was no 327 engines at all prior to 1962. My 1960 C30 is a 283 but 235s were available.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
'60 C30 should look like this. Original V8 truck may have some desirable options. VIN and engine code will tell the tale.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
It would not have come from the factory with a 327, but that doesn't mean that the engine is not a 327. You will have to check the suffix code on the right front of the block.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Check to see if the truck has the same Budd rims on the front as the rear. If not, it COULD be a truck some one has installed a C30 rear axle in.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Talked with seller. Truck has not ran in a few years, he pulled it out of an overgrown yard. It has aftermarket seats i can tell from the photos. Front rims seem to match with rear dually rims.
Vin: 0C413S107635 It definitely has some rust on the body, he is selling this thing cheap though and i have time. How difficult is it to find replacement panels and such for this type truck? I am competent with my welder. I am budgeting for a full rebuild on this thing. |

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
The initial plan once I get shipping quotes from TX to FL is to see the feasibility of getting current drive train operable for at least around the yard, then body work to fix all the cancer. Once that is caught up, pending status of the engine just drop a crate motor in until I have more money saved up to continue upgrades. I have a feeling the motor won't be original, but maybe. I'm paying $800 as long as i can secure transportation/shipment.

Judging by the hood emblem, the engine won't be original. The Bowtie without the "V" indicates it was originally a 6 banger.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Looks like an old tow truck, The A/C unit in the glove box is a unique touch. How much money do you have? Cause it's gonna take some of it.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Is it your dream to have a heavy duty old truck? If not, save the shipping, and look for something else.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Unless you are already in love with it I would look for something closer that I could see in person before plunking down any cash. They always look better in the pictures than they do in person. Lots of these old trucks out there if you're patient and do a little looking.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
I'm not in love with this one, but at $800 it seems like a good deal still. I really have a craving for a 1960-1962 chevy apache. Usually they seeem to be in the double digits even in rough shape.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
Interesting that it’s a 5 lug dually. I never knew they had 5 lug heavy duty trucks. My 61 is 8 lug.

Re: Starting on the Right Foot
I think that may actually be a C40, not a C30.
