I know it's a Furd but Help my Mom pls...

So Mom is dead in the water as her 2002 Expedition is sputtering when it drives for like 20 or more miles. It is intermittent and stops running. It has only 19,000 miles.Yup that's right. So I want to fix it for her. The dealer said it was a coil on #1 and a collapsing pcv hose. If I remember it was code po131 and po174? Probably wrong about that and can get the info tomorrow. I replaced the coil and the pvc valve but could not see how that line could collapse as it is the hard plastic line. I also did the fuel filter and cleaned the MAF sensors. It would still run with the MAF unplugged so I am baffled. Dang Furd! I know it's a stretch but you all helped me fix My Toyota so I thought I would give it a shot. Thanks In advance!

Re: I know it's a Furd but Help my Mom pls...

So some research shows that it may be a bad 90 degree pcv fitting on the back of the engine, Apparently these get oil soaked and deteriorate. Any thoughts?

That stupid hard plastic line could have a hole in it. Take it off, if you can. be careful, ford has some real stupid ways that they connect the ends on that thing.

Obviously I am not a ford guy, put hope you can get mom's vehicle going!!!

Thanks fellas. I did the 1st cylinder on the passenger side coil. Research says it most likely is a rotted out 90 on the back of the engine pcv line. I will try that tonight.

Sounds exactly like the 90° connector on the back of the manifold. You should go join the expeditionforum.com lots of good help over there.

Don't just order the elbow...get the whole ford hose assembly that has the elbow on it. Those trucks suck to work on....the engine is so far up under the firewall.

Re: I know it's a Furd but Help my Mom pls...

Well I pulled the pcv hose off and this thing looks brand new. Rubber is all in great condition and did a pressure test on the hose with compressed air and it is fine. I took out my vacuum tester and checked the EGR valve and it seems good. I tested it while running and boom it mimicked the exact running problem. I am thinking it is getting the wrong info as it has a vacuum line that goes through a switched pot.

Re: I know it's a Furd but Help my Mom pls...

Well I guess I am off to Harbor Freight to try out this new line of scanners called Zurich. They have one that will check the codes on my Toyotas SRS as well as ABS. I don't have ABS but someday I might. It is $200 out the door and the coupon for 20% does not work on it sooo... Here we go. Anyone tried one of these yet?
Oh and the Expedition.com was a great idea but has no traffic at all for my post. Nothing like this Forum. My wife says "you would think them fellas would respond as much as they are working on them Furds". I says "they must not have any time for the forum what with em codes a blowing all the time and all".

Re: I know it's a Furd but Help my Mom pls...

I got the scanner and it seems to function fine. I guess you just have to know what the codes mean or your just gonna have to guess as the instructions are limited to quick start up only. No engine light came on so no diagnostic codes were read. I did some fishing around with this thing and did find that something called Purge $26 and $27 were reading "low". Oh and some sort of short to ground on the ABS came up. Still no engine light. Oh and isn't it supposed to stop running when you disconnect the MAF sensor?
