Re: Double hump fueler heads
When I swapped heads from one style to another on an engine build once, I remember having to buy an "adjustable push rod length checker" so that I could assemble the engine with slightly used (but clean) head gaskets and Figure Out what length push rods it needed. You'll have to learn how to set all the rockers and such to use the tool, but it will get you right where you need to be.
Hopefully there is a canned answer for you so you don't have to get the adjustable pushrod and go through the exercise, but you may have to supply a little more info. Like... the year of the heads, how much have they been milled, what are the cc's, has the block been planed, what rockers are you using, etc. There can be a lot to the length of a pushrod once you step away from the original design for that engine.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
We can guess, and they will probably be close enough to work, but I would suggest getting a pushrod length checker.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
Unless you are changing cams in your motor (or there is a problem with the lifters or push rods in the truck now), you don't need new lifters or push rods. bolt those suckers on and go.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
Been running these double hump (camel hump) heads with accessory holes for twenty years plus, (hardened seats for unleaded) they have 194/150 valves instead of 202/160, but that's OK because they have small intake runners too and this engine was built for bottom end torque.
I read somewhere that if you have hydraulic lifters, you can just adjust to zero lash and add a quarter turn. So far so good! |

Re: Double hump fueler heads
I have not seen double hump fuelie heads, such as casting 461 look like that. The old school fuelie heads that I have had, Unless they had been drilled and tapped, had no accessory bolt holes in the front. What are the casting numbers of those heads? The ones I have had looked like this:

Re: Double hump fueler heads
186 and 492 both had double humps and were drilled for accessory holes. There are a couple of other castings that were on the 69-70 cars. They were on the Z/28 both 302 and 350 with 2.02 valves, screw in studs and guideplates. But they were on plenty of pedestrian 300hp 350 cars. I've got a set that were in a '70 Kingswood wagon out in the shop.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
Good to know. I guess I am getting too old school in my old age. I had a 69 Kingswood. Sold it a few years ago.Wish I would have kept it.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
Weren't the fuelie heads 2.02 valves with angle plugs? I have a pair of these and I think the date is 72 0r 73. I assume the set I have was an over the counter item.

Re: Double hump fueler heads
Yup and I owned the car - but didn't build the motor. The previous owner who owned the wagon for 20 + years had a local speed shop build it, and it was the original to the car 350. I believe it had about 73000 original miles total on the car. Also had 4.11 posi put in the 12 bolt and a full stainless exhaust. Car was quick for a big unit, but not a highway cruiser The only work I did to it was to put the ac system back together on the car - can't stand having an ac car without it working. I sold it to a computer geek who never had a classic car of any type before. He still texts me once in awhile and I tell him I still want first dibs if he chooses to sell it. I better stop talking about the grocery getter - not meaning to hijack the thread.
