June 2022 recreation of the Check the Champ tour?

I have literature on the tour they took the first 63 production trucks on from Detroit Mi to Cabo San Lucas Mexico , then went north to Oregon and back to Detroit via Macinaw bridge.
I was thinking of redoing the tour , open to anyone and any year of course that might want to participate in 2022 being 60 years since the original tour.

With virtually 4 years of planning and preparation , we should be able to pull this off.
Like any tour you dont have to do the whole thing.

Opinions and idea's?

Pretty cool thing to do, I'd meet up at the border but that's just me.
No more Mexico trips for the big guy.

I have no experience with crossing into Mexico. Is it a big deal?

No it's easy, they don't care since your heading south your probably going to be spending money they wave you right through. It used to be much safer than it is now days. Coming back into America though, the lines are outrageous and there is no fast lane for any reason. No place to take a 'p' and your gonna be there long enough to "need" that.

I'm a retired OTR Owner-Operator myself. But, that is one large trip there. How many miles total? I had to google it, from US border to Cabo is 1,049 miles.
Oh, and, a Orange Juice bottle worked well for me.

Re: June 2022 recreation of the Check the Champ tour?

Google maps shows 7422 miles & 126 hours drive time if you take the short cut through Mexico City & take the ferry over the Gulf of California. Seems like a good trip for a 3 day weekend.

I'm 5 miles from the Milford Proving Ground where it started. The entrance has changed a bit from the original film, but it is still in the same location. I'm in for a portion of the trip at least.

Re: June 2022 recreation of the Check the Champ tour?

Been surfing/camping down in Cabo and other parts deep into mainland Mexico and Baja many times, many years ago (35-45 years). What was wild and remote and made for a great adventure then has changed quite a bit. Now (if you believe the news), the political corruption and apparent lawlessness is what makes Mexico wild.
The drug cartel horror stories may be negative Media hype to some degree, but I'd certainly do your homework before embarking. Waking up dead one morning with your head missing could put a big damper on a fun trip.

Ouch negative view on the Mexico section. Maybe ask GM to get involved to provide film crew and security. Lol

GM heavily supports the Hot Rod Power Tour so there is a precedent. Plan B may be a similar but smaller trip. Leave from the MPG gates and return to it just like the original, but perhaps a shorter trip?

I'm sure GM gets hit up constantly for "support" of all kinds, and they really aren't interested in past history. Unfortunately there's few left who really care. So it can't hurt to ask but don't expect much. If all you got from GM was a photo op at the MPG gate just like the film, that would be something. On the other hand, what would be the most to expect? A few 2022 trucks with GM photo crew to tag along?
