Ram Assist Swap? ‘68

I have a ‘68 1/2ton CST, 327/400. It has the ram assist PS, I want to swap to an integral PS gearbox (circa late 70s). I’m clear on the fitment of the box, my questions are related to PS pump fittings and steering linkage.

1. Will my current PS pump work, or is it unique to the ram assist? Just get new hoses and bolt them in?

2. Will I need to change my linkage? (Tie rods, drag links, pitman and idler arm) or asked another way...is the ram assist steering linkage different than the integrated box linkage.

Thanks!

I have the same exact setup with my '68 CST. My ram assist works good and doesn't leak so I have no plans to change it, but to answer your question I would try to get the box and pump from the same vehicle. I will have to look at mine and compare it to one of my other trucks as far as the steering components. I would say they would be different.

Thumbs up Re: Ram Assist Swap? ‘68

I agree with LocDoc it best to get everything off the donor truck. Later if you want new stuff just take what you have and get new.

As far as the linkage yes it will need what ever the donor has.

I know on my 64 SS Impala I had to change everything out when I took the ramp off and installed the CPP 500 box.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Ram Assist Swap? ‘68

If interested, you can rebuild your ram assist. Corvettes used the same ram assist for a spell and you can buy rebuild kits from Ecklers. Here's a fantastic thread on the rebuild process with lots of pics: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=253657

If not wanting to rebuild, I agree with what's said above, get everything from the same donor. Goodluck!

Yup. That and my Turbo 400 kick down linkage will be kept and eventually sold.
