Strong Gas Smell

Hi there! We have a 1972 GMC P10 Ice Cream Truck with a 250 straight six. Overwhelming gas odor fills the truck 2 minutes after turning off motor. Just had carb rebuilt, thinking that was the problem and lo and behold, she still stinks. Had it to numerous garages, no one seems to willing or able to figure it out so we thought we'd bring the problem here, to the real experts! Any ideas? Thanks in advance OO>

Re: Strong Gas Smell

It might be the hot fuel in the carburetor evaporating

Re: Strong Gas Smell

You should be able to see some fuel seeping out when the smell starts. Clean as much gunk from tank to carb before checking.

Look around carefully and have a fire extinguisher close by as gas is flammable.

Re: Strong Gas Smell

Next time you park it like that, rubber-band a ziplock bag over the carb. If the smell does not appear, then it was coming from the carb. Then you'll know if it's gas boiling/evaporating/leaking from the carb or somewhere else in the fuel system.

Re: Strong Gas Smell

Get under it when the smell starts and see if it smells underneath? Maybe the engine cover gasket is bad?
72 would have the unvented fuel system. Make sure the vacuum lines are good and present.
Sniff around the gas tank to see if the stench comes from there?
