how do you get it apart???

Seems rusted to hell... any suggestions? tried heat, hammer... afraid i'm going to destroy it.

Not sure what you are trying to accomplish. If you are talking about the intermediate shaft, there is a plastic compound that is injected in between the upper and lower sections. It will take quite a bit of heat to melt it. You will see it start oozing out when it gets hot enough. You should have it in a vice and once it is hot and the plastic is melting take a punch and drive it out from the bottom.

If you are upgrading the steering shaft read this thread, especially starting with post #9 by "Blazerman".

Mine is quite rusty and I would like to replace the piece that connects to the rag joint.

I pondered buying one and welding it on, or finding one in a junk yard. I just need to know how to disassemble it.

Should it have any linear play? if mine is not moving, do you think that is a safety concern?

I replaced my steering column and the little plastic pins are meant to keep the immediate shaft in a stationary position but shear in case of impact by a wreck. Hence allowing some room before the steering wheel moves towards driver.
I had to heat mine to remove and it didn't look rusty. Heat/cool/heat may help you while having in a vice and some kind of a make shift slide hammer attached. Or you may need to destroy your outside piece and replace.
It looks like you may be ready for new parts.

You need to replace that for sure. Too much bad stuff going on there. I would try to find a good one in a JY.

X2 on that rusty one.

You probably could get a nicer one at a junkyard for 10 bucks. Screw the rust frustration.

I read that post and am confused as to how the Cherokee shaft is a bolt in

The splined end will mate to the steering box with no problem...but the factory column is also splined, not a dd shaft. Here is a pic to show what I’m talking about.

Dunno. I've never used one. I ran across that thread doing a search. I figured they ground flats on the splined end of the column. I guess I will have to pick one of them up when I go to the yard next time.

It slips over the splines with no problem, it’s actually too small for the Cherokee shaft to clamp down on.

Yeah, I don't see how that is a good fit. Actually it looks really dangerous.
