Steering Column Sliding Joint???
how do you get it apart???
Seems rusted to hell... any suggestions? tried heat, hammer... afraid i'm going to destroy it.

It will take quite a bit of heat to melt it. You will see it start oozing out when it gets hot enough. You should have it in a vice and once it is hot and the plastic is melting take a punch and drive it out from the bottom. Mine is quite rusty and I would like to replace the piece that connects to the rag joint.
I pondered buying one and welding it on, or finding one in a junk yard. I just need to know how to disassemble it. Should it have any linear play? if mine is not moving, do you think that is a safety concern?

I replaced my steering column and the little plastic pins are meant to keep the immediate shaft in a stationary position but shear in case of impact by a wreck. Hence allowing some room before the steering wheel moves towards driver.
I had to heat mine to remove and it didn't look rusty. Heat/cool/heat may help you while having in a vice and some kind of a make shift slide hammer attached. Or you may need to destroy your outside piece and replace. It looks like you may be ready for new parts. |

You probably could get a nicer one at a junkyard for 10 bucks. Screw the rust frustration. |

It slips over the splines with no problem, it’s actually too small for the Cherokee shaft to clamp down on.
