Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Ok. This is my first build on one of these trucks. I put my SPID in the post so I could get some input on how I will paint it. It is currently all Ochre. It has no trim on it other than one of the "custom camper" logos on one door and a very faded logo on one the front quarter panel. So I will eventually have to paint and trim it. It is a one ton Longhorn. It has a 402 with dual exhaust going through mufflers. It actually runs very good now. Sounds great. Needs brakes. Needs front end rebuild. The list is long. Everything underneath leaks, engine, transmission and rear end. Going to start with stopping the bleeding. This means body work and paint. So I really like the two tone paint. I would like ochre and white. Any chance it came that way? Did it have upper and lower trim? There is no trim on cab. Where white cab tops usually stop. Looking for options.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Think yours was a solid color. But my advise is to do it the way you want it. My truck is placer gold code 53 with complex two tone. No molding on the cab for the roof.
The spid makes no mention of the paint other than it's two tone My build sheet says pt as per husky edition only. My grandson calls it the banana truck . Like i said do it the way you want it.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
You need to request this color in BOTH solid & 2 tone. Then you may weight the options of drilling hole for the trim that is necessary for that factory look. But, seeing the driveline is needing full restoration, you have plenty of time to decide.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
511 is the code for solid ochre paint (available 70-72, pic 1)
536 is the code for the Conventional two tone (available 70-72, pic 2) 463 is the code for the Deluxe two tone (available 71-72, pic 3) 590 is the code for Special two tone (available 70 only, pic 4) All two tones were a combo of 511 ochre and 521 white. Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Just got a PM about the color 0f my truck. Its pacer gold. Code 53 not seen on trucks but was a popular color on 72 chevelles. Don't really want to dwell on it . But a rare color on a truck.
Guessing mine night be rare but back then you could almost get any compo you wanted

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Thanks Jocko
So 511 is solid ochre. The truck has been repainted. The original paint in the places I can see it looks much better than the repaint. I intend to get body work done on worst places then strip it down to metal. I do think I will do some two tone to make it what I like. Thanks so much for the pictures of the different paint schemes. Very nice to see the versions. Jerry |

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
53 is the code for Placer Gold, and probably my favorite Chevelle color, btw, but was not available as a standard color RPO on a 72 truck like yours - unless it was special ordered, in which case it would have "Special Paint" on the SPID (53 would not appear on the SPID). Not sure what you mean by where yours fits in(?) Do you mean whether it was a two tone? No way to really know from a special paint code whether yours was originally solid or one of the two tone variations - that could probably be discovered in a repaint process or some close snoopin. Got any pics of the truck or SPID?

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
4001DB is the special paint code - so that makes sense as your build sheet says to paint per Husky promo. Were they all Placer Gold? If I recall, codes like the 4001xx were primarily rearrangement of the two tone colors, ie, reversed in some cases or center color only, etc - not necessarily a non-offered color, but you never know when it comes to special paint orders - could explain why no trim divider for the roof. How did you confirm it’s Placer Gold (I can’t tell very well in the pics (on my dinky phone) but sure looks a lot like ochre). Did I miss those pics before somehow? I must be going blind! Ha. Thanks. That’s a cool truck, I want to learn more about this Husky promo thing, very interesting! I know there a another thread on it, will have to catch up on it if I ever stop traveling for work.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Mark, I found the husky thread, very interesting. Can see the gold better in those pics. How were you able to confirm it was Placer Gold?

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
The interior ,door jambs and inside of the bed are original as is the firewall. I had my paint supplier gun the truck at all those locations. Came out with gm code 53 he called it Cortez gold . Had many other names. Took a screen shot he also printed formula with the new paint code

Here's the formula pretty cool how it reads the paint.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
If you want to do deluxe 2-tone you will be on the search for four hard to find pieces of bed trim not reproduced (or is it now?)... R & L upper and R & L lower front.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Tim is right I dont think anyone is doing the longhorn uppers of lower fronts. All the rest are the same.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Yeah, the trim pieces will be hard to find. The Longhorn bed is really not popular in reproduction. I have found some products that may work. But I need to do more research. Has anybody here done it? Would love some pointers. When I strip paint I should be able to find original holes, if there. I think the finished truck would look bad without trim, solid ochre or 2 tone. I like stock as possible, but am willing to make some changes to suit me. I have no intention of competition shows. Just want a nice weekend truck, that does turn heads.

Re: Original paint Ochre vs 2 tone
Your truck is a Cheyenne with solid Ochre paint. You will find trim holes for the lower and none for the upper.
Here is the '71 Custom Camper/20 that was a Cheyenne w/deluxe 2-tone for another example
