Tranny cooler question

My transmission cooler is mounted thru the ac compresser thing. I want to remove the ac thing since I do not have ac running.
I dont want to mount my cooler thru the radiator as I have heard it will rub a hole in it.

Anyone have advice or pics of other ways to mount it?

Here's a pic of how I attached mine. I think I posted this pic last week, but didn't feel like hunting for it.

Here's a article on the lines. Not trying to give you a short answer but it will save a lot of typing.

I have mounted mine to the radiator on several vehicles i normally throw those crappy things that come with them in the trash and use cable ties,,

Once a friend of mine had a fan mounted with those spike things wore a hole in his alum radiator we patched the hole with jb weld and remounted the fan over a little with cable ties not a problem since.

You just run the cable ties thru and then back skipping a few rows?

A lot of people use the zip ties with little backing plates so they don't pull through the fins. However, the cooler is much more effective if it's not hugged up to the radiator, making that the rad actually heats it up. Just a couple of inches of space will dramatically increase the cooler's effectiveness. I've tested it and there was a temp difference of about 40 degrees between the 2 mounting positions. That was on my Corvette during serious german autobahn driving. With the cooler some distance from the rad the temps would be around 150-160 degrees max.

I been wondering about that. On both the K5's I had my trannys ran right around 160 degree most of the time. Both had TH350's I had them mounted just like swervin's on pre 80 trucks that have a little more room up there. They had some airspace behind them. On the Burb it has a factory AUX electric fan in that location I managed to get that cooler beween the fan and the A/C condensor. Once that fan gets tripped (210 degrees at the head) the tranny runs about 170 but normal driving where the K5's were seeing 160 I am seeing 185-190. Never gets higher but does run hotter then the others.

Maybe I will yank that fan this week and move the cooler out a little and see what happens. This might give me an excuse to the wife to get the Billit grill I want cause they alow a little extra room up there over that formed plastic mess. :p

See 1986 Chevy Suburban transmission cooler installationg and grille repainting for how I mounted mine. I fabricated some mounting brackets using aluminum and used existing holes in the radiator core support. It's bolted in securely.

Good luck!

I ran the zipties through the condenser but not the radiator. The consender is just there and not even able to be used since the mishap after taking out the old engine

B&M Cooler. Two pieces of steel. Had to drill 3 hole in radiator support, used one existing hole. Sorry for the bad pic quality.

KShortell: Your Burb is a carbon copy of mine! 86, C10, 350/700R, even the paint is the same. Cool!
