Confused
Help for a new guy. Just bought a 1969 GMC stepside 4x4 project. Title vin and door jam vin match,yay! But, it says CE1OD. Which, from what I have found out means 2 wheel drive, fleetwide. Apparently the only thing on this beast is the cab. How do I I'd the frame. Got a trashed rearend I got to rebuild, but what do I have?? How do I figure it out?

Someone else may be able to ID the vin, but seems like a 2wd vin if GMC are like Chevy. You can find a partial vin on the top of the frame rail right next to the power steering gear box.

MyGMC started with KE . I believe the vin is different chevy being CK or CE

Welcome to the site.
Pre 72 has only the single character before the engine code (S vs E in the 2nd column). C is 2WD, K is 4WD. (Whereas in 72, for a Chev for example, CC would be 2WD and CK would be a 4wd. I think GMC had a leading T when Chev adopted the leading C. Regardless, in 69, C indicates 2WD. Is the SPID still present in the glovebox? You likely have a 2WD cab stuffed onto a 4x4 frame. Is it currently a short or long stepside? Frame VIN crosscheck will help you iron our what happened. Don’t expect it to match. If it does match, then someone has swapped on 4WD front axle and t-case etc (not likely). But that’s ok if it doesn’t match, the important thing is for your cab VIN and title to match. Most states won’t dig to the frame VIN level. Recommend confirm your cab VIN has rosette rivets and not hardware store pop rivets, just to be safe. Last edited by jocko; 02-06-2019 at 05:53 PM. |

Thanks guys. Will get on looking at the frame for the vin numbers. It's a long bed. And the vin tag in the cab has original rivets.

Just because it looks like it has original rivets doesn't mean they are. People have been known to buy the original looking rosette rivets and change out VIN tags.

I keep reading that there is another vin # on the frame ? My 68 gmc has nothing except on the door tag. There is no way to varify that my cab and frame belong togeather. Yet I know they do because I bought this truck in 74 with 40,000 on it and the guy I bought it from never touched it . So my question is this a quirk or not .

So like 68Bowtie says you need to look on drivers side of the frame by the power steering pump and steering gear. You may have to wire brush the paint off.
Here is the original frame of my 71 swb showing the location of the VIN. The vin on the frame matches my door vin tag (hard to read, but it does). Which matches my spid, which also matches my orignal protect-o-plate.

I did see some numbers on my frame, just didn't look real hard at them. Gonna lean them up in the morning and see if they match. I'm pretty sure they won't. Then how to find the code for them

There's really no code to decode - frame VINs are just partials, they normally include stuff like yom, plant, and last 6 serial number match - but don't include all the leading info present in the full VIN. The last 6 digits are how you will know if they match the VIN on your metal cab tag.

Without digging too deep I would imagine what you have is a C1500 GMC (2wd) that was converted to 4wd. Your truck probably came with leaf spring rear, so it's just a matter of installing the crossmembers and front end. What front axle do you have? Does it have closed or open knuckles? How about the steering box, pitman arm, draglink? Manual or power steering? Got pictures?
I'd look at identifying the front axle and 4wd components. Does it have a Rockwell 221 or New Process 205 transfer case? Double cardon joint in back end of front driveshaft? Someone could have swapped the correct 4wd components for '67 to make it a bit more tricky. Buut is the engine crossmember bolted or factory rivets? Again, got pics?

If you can not find the VIN on the frame up front look on top of the frame on drivers side near the kick up by the differential .

I don't see a mystery here, I see a 2wd converted to 4wd. Please show pictures of your front axle, steering, engine crossmember at frame attachment transfer case shifter, etc. What transmission does it have, 3spd, 4spd, or auto? Look under the cab floor, is it cut for the high hump?
