WTB: correct clutch fan for 71 with 350

As I begin reassembly I want to swap to the clutch style fan for my truck. Right now I have the factory 4 blade so I will need the fan. Will source a new clutch unless you have a fan with a known good clutch.

All I have to offer is advice, if you can use it, and no offense intended if you know this already.

If you don't find a good OEM clutch, a Hayden #2747 is the correct Heavy Duty replacement (got mine at my NAPA store). I'm guessing you want plenty of cooling capability for our hot California summers -- whether you have A/C or not. Also, 6-blade fans are common but I believe an OEM-type 7-blade fan is better, and they are not loud. Aftermarket 7-blades are available. I also assume you have a fan shroud.

I spent a fair amount of time researching fan clutches three years ago when the shaft seal on my original clutch unit failed. I've been very happy with my Hayden clutch.

Re: WTB: correct clutch fan for 71 with 350

Stocker, thanks for the info. I’ve been reading til my eyes crossed the last couple of weeks. Great info for the clutch, now I just have to source the fan. I work out of town on the weekend so when I get home tonight I can measure my fan to see what diameter the 4 blade wood chopper is and the shroud too. Armed with that info, I may have alone in the correct 7 blade. I do have a shroud and a new aluminum radiator. Just thought the clutch driven ones would be better in this heat and around town where this will see most of its life. Any chance you have the part number on your fan so I can compare it to what I may have a line on?

Glad to help and here's a bit more minor info about that clutch unit. If you buy from NAPA, their part number is 271303. You can see it on their website. It comes with a [water pump] pilot bushing that you probably need to use. I needed it on mine.

My 18" 7-blade fan is original to my factory A/C truck, as is the shroud. Don't know if it has numbers on it and the truck is still in the body shop an hour away. Not even sure what the shroud diameter is but I'd guess at least 20", maybe 21". As I recall there's about an inch of clearance between the shroud and the tips of the fan blades. Oh one more thing, my fan blades are not all evenly spaced apart, which I assume is for quieter operation.

Mike thanks for the info. Killing me not being at the house to research this as I am sure once I make some measurements I’ll have a lot of my questions answered.

Anyone know what part number I should be looking for or what applications will work? I don’t have to have NOS or exactly from my application. I’ll take what will work in a 1971 C10, 350, W/O AC and short water pump. I have the original fan shroud and a 4 blade non-clutch fan currently.

I have this original 7 blade 18” fan from an A/C truck, cooled good and clutch is tight. $125 shipped.

Randy I just sent you the money. No super hurry I got called back in to work as soon as I walked in the door so I am back at it today and then Thursday through Sunday. Got to love being the junior guy at work all over again! One day off in 12 days, 12 hour days. Well at least I can put a new parts order together again.
