Removing ignition - Help!
I forgot the process on removing the igntion key assembly. I have my key and a paper clip but which way do I turn? I have tried all directions but it won't pop out.
Any suggestions? |

I just took mine out yesterday, I stuck in the paperclip, turned counter-clockwise, then a wiggle jiggle, and it slipped out like a fart after thanksgiving dinner.

I had to get the key in there, turn it to ACC and push a paper clip in there and pull. Seemed to work mint.

Be sure the Battery is disconnected before you do it.

just the lock cylinder will come out. The bezel will thread off after the lock barrel is out. did the key break off flush in the lock barrel?

No it did not brake off flush, there was enough room to put a screwdriver in and turn the ignition cylinder

try cutting a notch in a cheap or old common screwdriver so you can turn and pull on the barrel.

Alright but I have a question If I were to remove the electrical plug from the back of the ignition switch would I be able to hot the engine from the plug? I know that the RED wire is the hot wire, but which wire is starter? and is this possible at all?

sure, you can jump it that way, or add a switch. The starter motor will run off of the purple wire, applying power to that will energise the starter solinoid. it will work fine, it just won't be very proper, but if you not concerned with being proper don't worry.

OHHHH ARGH I just took my truck the hardware stoer for a test run and guess what? again it wouldnt start for me!!! uh I hate it. Like I said before I replaced the ignition cylinder and I thought it was fixed, I have some questions. My engine is running alittle warm lately (I am in the process of fixing it now) but it runs about 200deg. would this affect the way my starter works? like if I were to have a faulty starter would it work cold just fine, and then when the engine heats up not work? I have a brand spankin' new battery and alternator
The thing that gets me is you can push start the truck just fine, so it has power to the engine, it just wont start, the starter wont even click. Is there some type of relay? or wiring I need to check? Brad |

A hot engine will fry your starter... Mine got a little warm on the manifolds when I ran it too lean once, my starter hasn't worked the same since... Its like my battery is dead when the truck is warm, but it has enough to get the truck to start (usually starts on the first to second crank) when the truck is cold, on the other hand, it will fire right up like normal.

Hey I just found out that the truck will start up fine once i let the engine cool to under 160 deg. so it must be the starter. right???

The starter and solenoid both are affected by heat, usually trucks with headers have the exact problem you are discribing beacuse of the heat generated in that area. the cheapest thing you could do is install a heat shield so that there is a seperate air passage around the starter and solenoid, this will keep it cool and working when you want it too.

Have to agree with typhoon....
Headers too close to the starter have been an issue....they do make heat shields for the application...

The "nut" is the bezel itself. You may need to gently tap the bezel counterclockwise with a hammer and flat screwdriver. Lodge the screwdriver in one of the detents in the bezel to get it to move.
