Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
I have looked on the forum for ideas but there has been nothing new posted, so if anyone can help with some ideas ? The stock bumpers look too wide in my opinion, however if anyone knows of a company who makes one that looks good I would go with stock. Cutting and chroming are another option. I do want to keep my stock taillights. Thanks !

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
I need to scan a photo of my 1970 stepside I had as a teenager through my early 20’s. The PO had installed a custom made number that was only as wide as the bed box. It was squared off like the old dealership bumpers and had the old style raised checker pattern on the step part.
It was chrome and the sides extended up and behind the steps. I might try to build something similar for my latest project. |

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
Back when Japanese trucks were "mini", and so were downsized US brand downsized trucks, we would get chrome step bumpers made for those to use on Stepsides.

Here's mine with a factory set up. I wonder if you could use a 1st gen Camaro bumper?

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
Here's my Stepside step bumper. It was on the truck when I bought it in June of 1973.
Most likely it was a dealer extra. Truck was originally sold by Felix Chevrolet in LA. There was a manufacturer tag from Saf-T-Bumper in Los Angeles. I like it. It's solid. It's taken a lot of abuse and been straightened out. Good footing w/o dropping the tailgate. Even been used as an anvil on occasion. ''Kids'' can have their roll pans -- I still need a Truck.

Here's my 67 with the dealer installed bumper. I think the narrow chrome stepside sport bumpers look good too.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
I have decided to use the factory chrome stepside bumper. I figured out what my problem was with the stock bumper. I will have pictures when I get back next weekend.
Thanks everyone !! |

Not my truck, but a buddy's truck. He modified a 1st gen Camaro bumper.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
Here is a photo of my old 1971 stepside from around 1991. This truck had been my daily driver from age 16 to 22 at this time. Guess I had put at least 100,000 miles on it by then.
Hopefully you can see the square, chrome bumper that was only as wide as the bed. The tail lights were from a 1971 Kingwood station wagon. Please forgive the ugly American Racing directional wheels. They were "cool" at the time and when I converted to front disc the other wheels I had would no longer fit and these wheels fit a college kids budget. You can see the front end of the 1979 CJ7 in the background that I wish I still had as well. |

Pretty far and snakey between Cabot, AR and Ontario, Canada. Makes a person wish they knew the history of the journey.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
Sure is. I don’t remember a Carrigan
Chevy. That was a long time ago though.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
My current 67 has a bumper from Wallace Baker Chevrolet in Beebe but it is too wide and too far gone to be of any use besides scrap or a display piece in the shop. Not sure what I will do for a rear when the time comes. I'd like to build something similar to the 1971 I had but I am a long way from needing that right now.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
I wish I knew the history too. I think the truck was imported in the earl 90's. I bought it from the second owner in Ontario in 98. Before that is a mystery.

Re: Stepside bumper, I know another thread!
It's interesting because Cabot is 20 minutes from me and about 10 minutes from 67c10step.
