Factory just used the one in the carb. I always take them out and put an inline under the cab where the line comes from the tank.

I just have the one that is situated between the fuel pump and the carb. I'm not sure if there is another inside a Q jet or not but I know there is one inside the carb on a 1 barrel rochester tho

Should be one inside the carb on a q-jet. Anything else was added.

I installed a aftermarket filter between the fuel pump and the cab . with these old trucks there is always a chance of junk in the tank , also the aftermarket is bolted to the inner fender and is easier to change and larger than the one inside the carb .

Just run the line back to the tank Jodie. You should see it if someone has added one at some time (and the one in the carb).

i bet your filter sock in the tank looks like sh!t they do clogged corroded and collapse over the years. not a bad idea to replace it because it stops anything big from getting into the fuel line in the first place. i would also add another filter as stated b4 in the rubber hose under the truck

When you do take out the filter in the carb make sure that the new one goes in the same way. Some are directional and the truck will run fine upto 50 mph then will go no faster. I learned this the hard way. I did it on my old bosses truck. The next day I was looking for a job. I don't put inline filters the wrong way since. LOL

you def want to filter it before the pump with an inline filter
it saves a lot of wear on the pump and it makes more sense to filter it there instead of at the carb because the dirt will tear up a fuel pump fast you can also leave th one in the carb just for extra protection to the carb ports just my 2Cents

learn from my mistake. . . be careful of what kind of flow the fuel filter is capable of. i spent $50 on a huge moroso filter. ran fine for a while, then all of a sudden the engine started starving really bad. couldn't go over 1/8 throttle or up hills.
took everything apart and cleaned it. air flowed thru the filter, fine. replaced electric fuel pump. it was several years old. same problem. high pressure 8-9 psi pump. same problem. check filter again. everything seems fine. try different carb. same deal. third carb. no change. tow truck to dads shop 3 hours away. get professional engine mechanic to take a ride. tell him all about it. he takes it and 15 minutes later, brings it back. runs great! put filter back in quadrajet, took *&^%%$&() moroso off. never had a problem since! three weeks of messing with the damn thing! just never tried it with out the "added" filter! |

From what I have read for a mech pump the filter goes after it for a elect pump the filter goes before it. Since thats how most cars are built and they spend tons of $ on R&D they must know something.

First, THANKS to everyone for your help/comments.
Second, I traced the lines from the tank all the way to the fuel pump and up to the carb, I only see the one filter at the carb. Is there one INSIDE the fuel pump?? Thanks again
