Buying a new fender

My driver's side fender got smashed up and I think it's beyond repair. I found a few on Craigslist but they're needing a lot of work. I can get one from LMC and save money on shipping because they're located here in KC, but I've heard they are Chinese junk. Anyone know of another place where I can get a fender out? Would greatly appreciate any help.

My experience is pretty limited. An aftermarket fender on my '67 did not fit well. It was too long and created a host of problems getting the door, cowl, and hood to align. If I had to do it again, I'd find a factory fender even if it needs some work. We see them here in Arizona, usually in pretty nice shape.

Back when I asked the same question, almost universally, I was told to find an original fender in good shape. Maybe things have changed, but I doubt it. It certainly helped being in the West when finding one though, as noted above.

For what year? I know the aftermarket 67-68 fenders are a mess if you want them to fit correctly.

Thanks everyone. This is for a 68, I may take the fender by a body shop to see if it can be fixed. I appreciated all the good advice.

Have no experience with after market fenders. When I restored my '71 4x4 I hit many a salvage yard and swap meet for original GM metal. I realize that most likely is not as easily done in today's world but I agree, look for some original GM metal as nothing fits like original.

"IF" your of a mind for a possible road trip next month in Hutchinson NW of Wichita is a up coming swap meet. While not large I normally see a few 67-72 fenders at various prices and conditions. Just a possibility if interested. Good luck in your search.

Find a GOOD body shop with your fender that actually does repair old sheet metal. Too many shops now days just want to remove it, replace it, prime it and spray it with today's throw away vehicles.

A gmc fender is the same as 67-8 so keep that in mind.
69-72 chevy fenders fit great, with a small amount of simple work.

Take your opinions on here with a grain of salt as most dont have a clue how to fit a body panel.
I have a 72 gmc with a repro fender and it fits fine too, the difference on a gmc is the fender eyebrow trim and grill overlap could hide problems that might be apparent on a 68 chevy.

How about just posting a want to buy ad in the parts section here on the forum? Somebody could probably ship you one.

When I want to buy a part that I know will fit and work, and I don't post a want to buy here for a used one or if that did not work out, I shop on GMC Pauls website. I count on him as already done the homework for us, and only carries good stuff that fits. If it's not on their site, you generally shouldn't buy it anywhere. I guess his sales pitch got to me.

And here's one more thing. I order catalogs from all the vendors that I know of that offer one. Looking through them, you never know what you'll find that is not on the vendor's web site. Look what I found in the Early Classics catalog, I've been keeping it in mind for when I need it (cool pictures, yes?):


Manes Truck Parts also sells used parts, but I don't know if that includes body parts.

Since we need photos here is the LMC right front fender the PO put on my Burban. Notice how the factory hood and the fender do not have the same radius. And the gap gets about 3/16" wider in the last 10-12 inches to the front edge.
On the left hand LMC fender the PO installed notice the front edge of the fender doesn't stick out as far as the hood. And in the final picture notice how well the front edge of the hood lines up with the body line in the front of the fender.

This is on my daily driver so to me it wasn't worth the work to cut and section the fenders so they would meet the hood correctly.

I would find a original to start with. If you were to use a aftermarket one you are going to regret it.
