Just out of curiosity

Why did this thread get wiped

This guy did not deserve what he got as a new member.

The old timers may not like what I say
But when you treat new comers the way you did him
It makes a lot of people
Unhappy
That there are certain people around here that can say anything

When others say how they feel
They just get shut down

That is my truth
Guys talk about it through pm

It will kill this site if keeps happening

It's too bad that happened. I saw it coming and just decided it was best to steer clear of it. Maybe I should have spoke up.

It already is killing the site. I’ve brought this up before and was basically told to be quiet, the site has great membership and I didn’t know what I was talking about.

Nearly all of the big c-10 builders have left the site. I used to try and get new guys to join but was usually told that they had joined and didn’t like the way they were treated.

It’s really too bad as this site was the very first form of social media that I joined and used to love coming on here. I still do, but just to check the sales board and the craigslist threads. At least for the most part anyways. I even stopped updating my build threads.

There is so much information to be learned from this site, maybe one of those things that has been forgotten is how to treat people.

Got it
Or maybe the forum should have an area where guys can Speak Freely ??

It doesn’t seem to work very well, when moderators are in the controversy
And have the capability of closing anything
The don’t like to see written

I think he's the one that closed it.

As far as big builders leaving this board among others. Id have to say the bigger reason is because of Instagram and Facebook.

Funny how the person who had the most say during the thread in question was the one who gets to decide when its gone too far.

They’ve gone to other platforms because of the way they were treated here. Ive talked to a few of them about it as I miss the in-depth build threads that some of them would share with us. At least on IG or Facebook you can block those who feel they have the right to be jerks. You know, the ones who say whatever they feel like but then put IMHO at the end. As if it justifies cutting people’s projects down.

And just to keep things clear, I am a fan of all types of builds.

I don’t think anything was over the line except maybe the “shaking the rats out of the bushes” statement, but then the person apologized for his harsh words.
I think the fella should stick around, he’s definitely passionate about the trucks.
I agree with pm’ing Tim if you have concerns. I’ve found him to be a straight shooter.

I let him know the path that was being taken. I usually acknowledge something ONCE, then move on and do not reference it again. I will also preface it as MY OPINION to do ________________.

However as he saw that I unsubscribed as things were getting petty and stupid, her brought the same subject again and again........

Re: Just out of curiosity

I don’t think I will be pm’ing anyone on this

Plenty of people pm me on it
And agree it needs to stop

I just believe, the concerns should be transparent

In my opinion this forum is the best one out there
For the most part, always civil and supportive
But
When you have new members or members with low post counts
Leaving or not participating because they feel it is a
‘good old boys club ‘
And can not speak up to old timer members with high post counts

Traffic on here will slow down
As we are seeing

The membership may increase in numbers
But that does not matter
If less people are participating

Probably best not to keep sweeping it under the rug

Re: Just out of curiosity

Speaking as a "grandfather" I find this forum to be, in the main, an exciting way to share the knowledge I have gained over 50 years working on automotive products....

In this country, the right to free speech is an essential element of all things we all hold dear....by punishing anyone for speaking their mind is a recipe for disaster....

We all have varying degrees of "sense of humor"....some here lack it totally, more than made up for by the rest of us old fogies...

An essential part of any growing community is the input supplied by ALL those involved, open discussion and eventual adoption of knowledge gained.

I really feel sad for those that have a more jaded view of things... they must be really lonely people....and they are usually left wondering Why?

For this forum to continue to grow and prosper we all should remain acutely aware of how we address each other...bantering aside....cant we all just play well together?

"There is so much information to be learned from this site, maybe one of those things that has been forgotten is how to treat people."

So true...lets all consider for just one minute, our reaction to how this "newby" was treated....

Re: Just out of curiosity

Expecting this forum to continue growth and see an increase in participation IS not realistic. ALL forums are declining.

"Old foggies" haven't moved on to newer social media options, whereas the younger ones have. Younger folks are NOT into cars/trucks as those that went before them, which even Stevie Wonder can see. Younger kids would rather Uber/Lyft or Reach/Turo.

Don't kid [nice pun] yourselves into believing that a decline in forum participation or membership is because some noobs get treated like all those noobs that went before them. Most of you weren't treated like a king or queen when you joined your first forum either, yet here you are. Forums were red hot for a decade, then came EVERYTHING else that technology had to offer in social media.

What IS different now is that the younger kids are more likely to wear their feelings on their sleeves, because its en vogue to fit in with all your other social media buddies that get plenty of attention from doing the same.

So yeah, that's just my opinion and I don't give a rats ass if anyone agrees, or even disagrees, with it or not.

Keep on truckin'

BigBird05 is an old "newby"....just like all of us deep down...I for one welcome his participation and will try and help out wherever I can....

I feel like I get you 100%. I do really love this board and I have from my first day. It amazes me the knowledge and talent that is here. That said i always have to be kinda careful about what I say because there are some (not pointing at Tim specifically he’s usually been pretty decent to me) that don’t always see things the same way as I do, and can be quick to jump on people for seeing the truck world differently. This board doesn’t take confrontation well at all and I get that totally, it’s just in my eyes I like to be able to defend my self when necessary and that isn’t always taken well here. I spend time on other forums like pirate and camaro5 and there participation is down as well, camaro5 is pretty slow these days much slower than here. I think the post about the younger people(I’m 31 and don’t do facegram, instabook, blah blah blah at all) have moved on to other social media platforms. This board is a great resource for these old beauties and we definitely need to do what we can as members to keep it going.

Sorry I missed the excitement. What would had helped a bunch would had been a direct link to the post in question, the users name the question was about etc. I would be more than happy to look into the problem, its hard to do if I was not here and do not know though.

Personally, I have no issue with anyone discussing what they feel is right, wrong, how things should be handled etc. However, most times only a smidge of the issue is public and we do not practice making everything behind scenes public. I am going to go try and make heads or tails of everything.

I found the original post, and the one in question. My oh my what a mess. I do not believe Tim did a thing wrong. Yes, he is staff. He closed the thread because of the drama in it. Chevyland, I think had you reported the post, or PMd one of us, we may had been able to stop it before it got that way? Not sure, just speaking from past. I searched through the reported posts from the last 3 years and don't see any from you. We all know search sucks, so if I am wrong I apologize. If there is such a concern about sr members vs new members, I would had thought those would had been brought up to us. The other day I had to moderate a long term member who was just being hateful and rude. Their account was suspended for violations. The only new members I have moderated in that manner(in recent history) have been spammers.

I had a member accuse me of favoritism with older members in a bad deal recently. The person received a refund and was told to keep the parts, but the seller was still wrong in their mind. Because I did not remove this seller from the site, I was told that I was watching out for old friends.

I really get tired of the accusations like those without merit. If there is an issue, by all means bring it up. Report the post, shoot us a PM etc.. Just because we do not do things exactly as you believe they should be done (you being generalized at this point) does not mean we do not review issues and try to work things out in the best way. Most every staff member on this site works outside of here, Josh and I included. We may not be able to see every problem as it arises, but we try. If they are not reported, its hard to prevent problems. If we did not care, this site would had been sold out to the big guys years ago.

Please do not twist and take this post wrong. A simple PM or reported post would had been a lot less dramatic. Think about the new people coming in that see this and get the wrong impression of this forum, community and our commitment to the hobby.

BTW, the user who is never coming back was active an hour ago. Thats typically the way. Members that get mad and leave simply log out. The ones that post about it usually lurk and then either email me or start posting again. That is why we remove the im mad, i am taking my ball and leaving posts in most instances.

Thanks

Just FYI, if a mod does that they will be removed. We have cleaned house of all but 4 in the past. Again, a good reason for using the report post feature.

Re: Just out of curiosity

Popular? Maybe not the most popular format right now. Relevant? Very very much so... and will continue to be long into the future. Let's take a peek into the future and what will continue to make this forum format relevant, in my humble opinion...

Based on the statistics for segments and sub-segments of the aftermarket parts industry you can see some staggering numbers for performance parts alone. I think I've posted numbers before, look them up. Big bucks. Look at the projections going forward. Growth!

How does this translate to relevance? People come to sites like this to figure out what to do. What works and what doesn't. Once the collection of components has been purchased; said enthusiast must synthesize the parts into a performing package. This takes research for most people. Thus the perpetuation of sites like this.

The archives on some of these types of forums have dept of detail, massive volume are most certainly relevant.

I don't know what happened, but my gut instinct is: let Punky Brewster roll his opinion in a zig zag and go smoke it in his safe space. He'll be back when he realizes help is to be had and freely given.

Maybe a bit thicker skin comes with age... along with experience! That's for everyone but me. My skin can be thin, because I'm a know it all!!

Another two cents... worth the price paid.
