Hydro locked
Hey peeps, question for ya....
I’ve got a 65 C10. Where I have to park it it is nose downhill. Last time I drove it I filled the gas tank ( overfilled it actually). Went to start it and it is locked up. Drained the oil and got about 5 gallons of oil/ gas mix. Anyone else have this happen? Original tank behind the seat. Edelbrock carb, new fuel pump. |

Wow, 5 gallons! Gravity draining of the tank thru a defective pump? The tank is higher than the fuel pump regardless of the downhill slope. Did it happen again on flat ground?

Put a fuel pump on it and the float level may be to low and the needle not sealing up. The fuel pump is the check valve that stops the fuel.

The needles and seats should stop the flow of fuel. If the fuel pump diaphragm was ruptured, it would leak fuel into the crankcase, but the engine wouldn't hydro-lock. It is possible that overfilling caused enough pressure that the fuel made it past the needles and seats, since E-brocks are notorious for having to have a lower regulated pressure. Your truck should have a vented cap, though. Let us know what you have, there.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I was leaning towards needles, seats, floats etc. The fuel pump is new. The old pump would leak out of the small hole in the pump housing if it was stopped in the right spot which is why it got replaced. Thankfully these Edelbrocks look easy enough to rebuild. Cap is vented, good thinking though, not something I would have considered.
