I Hate Arizona

well I don't really hate Arizona...

I'm having the hardest time passing emissions. first two times too high of a hydrobarbon count at idle and after replacing the intake manifold gasket and correcting the jets. I now passed the idle test with flying colors, but now the carbon monoxide percentage is through the roof.

a lot of the state is emission test free, other than the Phoenix and Tucson metro area. I've heard of people leaving the city to get the registration, but I don't know how that would work if your driver's license has a phoenix address.

I think they know by the color of your renewal tag whether you went thru the sniffer or not. I'm thinking of buying my mom's 93 Lumina and it has never been sniffed. I'll have to take it thru to register it. I know it sucks when you don't pass (been there) but you'll like it when it is running clean and well.

CO is fuel delivery and HC is the engines ability to burn that fuel [efficiency]. So if CO is high it could be the adjustment itself, or not enough air such as a dirty air cleaner or too high of a float setting, or too large of a jet size. I assume it failed the high speed CO if so you may try to lower the float some. As you are finding out it is really difficult to do this on your own without a 4 gas machine to see what happens when you change certain things and readjust.

Or, instead of spending hours tuning and failing, you could just dump a couple quarts of drygas into the gas tank, and pass emmissions with no further hassle.
I have gotten 3 oil burning, poorly tuned dogs through Colorado emissions, and then New Hampshire emissions by doing this. The worst offender was a 1975 D0dge D100, with a clapped out 318, it belches smoke when cold, and burns a quart every 750 miles. I used 4 quarts of alcohol based drygas into that POS, and passed with flying colors.
The other vehicles that failed, then I drygassed and passed, were my Longhorn, and an '81 el Camino.
It works.

I passed my old 71 GMC that had a built 350 by pouring a half gallon of isopropal alchohol combined with 93 octaine gas. She may have ran a bit warm, and cleaned the valves real good, but for a one time event....I passed with flying colors. I made sure to run around I-240 for about an hour before going through to make sure everything was blown through.

Sounds to me like all you need is an adjustment screw turned on your carb to pass. Seams to me that the motor doesn't have to be tuned correct to pass, get her cranked and timed over to pass, then turn her back to run right after you pass.

We live in the same general area (I'm in Phoenix ) and when I fail emissions , I go to Chandler West Repair on the corner of Chandler Blvd. and Beck . If a truck just needs proper setting up , then for $70.00 they will put it on their machine , adjust it and then " THEY " will take it thru emissions them selves and return the truck back to you passed with a clean sheet . I found it to be the easiest way for me , $70 bucks for no hassles , no long lines and no additional $ fees $ for extra emissions tests .

Each center has signs posted that say " attempts to bribe an inspector is a crime that is enforced " and they do call the cops .

That welfare for mechanics. Its legalized bribery. Pay an extra 70 bucks and you get a clean sticker. I still say 10 bucks of drygas is cheaper.

Bowed is right. when I was in the Chicago area we would regularly do the same for many hotrods. many times all it took was retarding the timing to about -4 degrees & fattening the idle. there is a lot of science behind this concerning combustion efficiency & knowing how many HC are in raw fuel etc. best off is to pay to have it done then retune for performance after you pass.

My`99ZR2 has both cats reamed.I`ll use racing fuel if it doesn`t go through.I think it sucks that some states are sniffing older vehicles.I`ve noticed,now with gas-miser/OD/cleaner-burning cars,that people are commuting 3-5 times farther.When you drive an older vehicle(67-72),you tend to keep an eye on mileage.These new cars are going 30,000mi.per year or more.

Chat all have emissions tresting I think, Jackson does not seem to care yet. :p

That's the "stinkin" part of livin' in the desert. When I registered mine this year, the lady at the MVD counter mentioned that in two years, my '69 wouldn't even need to do an emissions test. I think there's some kind of cut off if your ride is old enough.

Then you aren't in the part of Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson) that needs testing........everything 67 and newer needs it here and will for the foreseeable future.

New Hampshire emissions testing? Where is this? wasn't aware that they were doing emissions testing in NH yet. I wonder how well my 255K+ Saturn would do on the sniffer. Also, how far back do they go (i.e. what years are exempt)?

No smog check in my part of the USA...When I lived in AZ it was easy to pay off Tuneup Masters to get the car to"pass".......$100.00 should do it.

Having lived in Tucson and Phoenix, go to Tucson and get it tested. In Phoenix they do an idle test and a load test. In Tucson, they do like a 30 second idle test. Which even I had both my vehicles pass amazingly enough. In Phoenix I always had to go back 2 or 3 times. If you hav an emissions slip, they will honor it ever if it's not the right county.

Normally in Tucson, I take out the air filter and drive up and down the freeway right before testing, normally passes. =D

it has recently because they're making it bigger and better, so traffic is redirected alot and crowded for that reason.
