Harbor freight one ton engine hoist 129.00 sale ends today

I want to go get this today before going to work, it's $128.99.

Will this be enough for lifting big block Chevy with boom extended out?

Just the engine, already bought transmission jack on a previous sale.

Don't plan on pulling engine now, but the sale price has me wanting it, one day it will be needed.

What do you think?

As a big block weighs in the vicinity of 600 pounds, this stand rated at a "ton" should be ok....however, the website lacks any detail showing how the lift capability drops off as the length of the boom increases.

I also see several reviews where the users detail that the outer legs of the hoist are not wide enough apart to allow an engine stand to come between them.

This stand should never be used without the longer front legs in place with the locking pins in place....it will tip over if the front pins are not correctly in place.

Suggest you open the box while you are at the store and check all parts are there....ask me how I know missing parts are a problem.

Wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. It's 1 ton with the boom fully retracted, 1/4 ton with the boom fully extended. You can see this if you enlarge the second picture. I've never seen anyone use a hoist with the boom retracted, it's just too short.

I have a different one, and they are not really set up to do big blocks. Atleast fully extended, and up and over the core support. They can be shakey enough with a iron small block.

Not to tell you I have never done a big block of any make with it, but I removed the front clip. This giving myself plenty of room to accomplish the task safely. Along with setting up the truck so it would roll over the cherry picker easily making getting into position easy. I had a F250 with a 460, and I had that engine in and out several times. If I had a friend it was much faster to remove the clip then doing the up, and over.

Agreed on the .25 ton capacity. Might troll the local CL for a US made one and put an HF air over hydraulic cylinder (or hand pump) on it if the existing one doesn't work. No need to buy new.

Don't stress man, just buy it before you need it. That price comes around quite often. I bought one about a year ago, and while waiting for them to bring it out to my truck I considered the weight capacity again and changed my mind. I walked back in the store and exchanged it for the 2 ton at 179. and glad I did. I've been setting in and pulling out my 5.3/6L80e engine/trans combination several times. It's not a big block but I think it's close to the weight of a BB engine only. It feels solid and balanced to me, and I'm glad I spent the extra 50. bucks. I remember watching Metaldoc's build, his engine fell while setting it in and it came close to taking his hand off. It also jacked up his radiator support and dented his freshly painted firewall.

I have one. I have used it to pull 2 big block fords, a 454, and countless smaller engines. I have upgraded to a larger one, and I keep the HF unit as a spare. Just remember you are buying it for the price, not because it’s a quality piece(because it’s not). Don’t stick your hand anywhere it might get crushed.

I have a HF unit, put a Pneumatic/Hydraulic piston on it. Not sure what all people are looking for, but I bought mine to 'lift and engine'. It does that quite well.
Edit: Ya don't get a one ton!

I have the 2 ton version from Northern Tool (looks the same, probably a rebrand), and in the fully extended slot (1/2 ton rating and usually the only length that can actually reach into a car) it wasn't happy pulling a fully dressed Pontiac 400 out of my car.

This is when I pulled a 350 off of subframe. Apparently it was sometime around Christmas and a long time ago, my house is green now. Pontiac motors are heavy, even in the 1T slot it creaked and groaned.

I would definitely pass on the 1 Ton version.

I bought it on my way to work Sunday, but returned it last night and exchanged it for the 2 ton version.

Before exchanging I compared both 1 and 2 ton display models and the 2 ton has wider base, bigger jack, taller bar the lift boom hooks to.

Don't need it right now, but have it for one day.

Will double check that everything is in boxes tonight.

I got the 2 ton version when it was on sale about a year ago. Same reasoning as you guys...plus it was just a bit more for the peace of mind.

BTW it folds up nicely out of the way when not in use and it tucks against the wall minding its own business until I need it again.

It's a good idea to keep ram fully retracted when not in use. If you do leave the ram exposed, or when you use it, hit it with some WD-40 to prevent rusting.
