Ford 9" install
I've got a 9" to put in my 67 chevy with the coil sprung rear. I know some have done this. Well looking at it. It's looks like the axle shaft diameter increased from 3" to 3 1/4" about where you would mount the trailing arm. Since the U-bolt slips over the axle and into the trailing arm how does it work with the added 1/4"

Id just notch the axle perches off the old rearend and enlarge them to fit the new one
I put a late model rachet locker out of a leafspring truck into my 68 Just get the perchs cleaned up and ready to weld then set the rearend onto them stab the u bolts and check it for sqaure i measured from the perch to the backer plate made that sqaure then measured from the front wheels to the back wheels and made sure that was the same then set the pinion angle at 4 degrees down rechecked everything then tack welded it tightend the u bolts let it down and re checked the pinion angle shouldnt change but i wanted to be sure it was the same on the ground as it was on the jack so i welded them for good for the panhard bar i made a mount out of angle iron and welded it onto the rearend and got a longer bar off a 3/4 ton You could use the entire set up panhard bar off a 3/4 ton Since they have a big bracket that welds on the tube instead of mounting on the housings like 12 bolts. But you will need to get the bracket that rivets onto the truck as well since the angle for them are different . |

Thanks for the reply. The problem, I forsee, is that the holes in the trailing arms are 3" apart to fit the 12 bolt rearends 3" diameter. This 9" is a little bigger in diameter. You go and try and shove the U-bolt past the axle tube and it won't line up with the holes in the trailing arms. I know others have been here.

It shouldnt be a problem. Mine was the same way and it worked fine. If you have a spare U-bolt try it over the axle.
Oh.... I just remembered that my u-bolts were aftermarket, from ECE. They might be a little thinner than stock. Just try yours and see. I'll try to get pics.

LeRoy, I just put a 9" in mine and everything fits fine. Just grind the saddles a bit for the proper fit. My U-bolts fit the new axle tubes just fine. No probs there either . I'll also try to find a pic of mine.

Bowtie, what vehicle did your rearend come from? I know the Lincoln 9" rears were pretty similar as far as length . . ..... what else is close/same?

SCOTI - This one came out of a '78 Ford Bronco. I did narrow it a few inches.
1972C10 - I merely installed this for a fill port. Its got a threaded steel bung that was welded to the housing. The cap is CNC milled from aluminum and simply installs hand tight. They are around 20 bucks from Jegs. Chris
