Front disc brakes question

I am in the middle of a restore of my dads 70 short bed C10 and I had questikns about swapping to disc brakes in the front. What I have seen is that the kit from Brothers seems to be a good value as it comes with other front end parts like ball joints, idler and pitman arms etc. What else would I need in order to complete this kit. Also would like to hear from anyone else that has run this kit. Thanks!

I’ve looked at the same kit but have not pulled the trigger on anything yet. If you get the kit with the ball joints and tie rods I’d say you would want to replace the cross shafts and bushings upper and lower. I plan to replace my front springs as well.

Look into scarebird, their kit will allow you to keep the 6-lug hubs, and stock spindles.

I didn't answer because I have a 3/4T and bought a different company's kit. The lower ball joints didn't fit the lower control arms and modifications were required. Also, it's Sunday and maybe people are doing something other than haunting the board. Give it some time for more answers.

You mention having a "70 short bed C10," which is a 1/2 ton truck, and the link to the Brothers kit you gave says it is for 3/4 ton only.

Can't offer much other than to say that in my experience Brothers has been good to work with. My son's 69 has 71 or 72 parts (Rotors, Calipers, Bearings, Upper Ball joints), and I only know this because that is what we had to replace so far. It has the 6 lug setup and power steering and power brakes. Not sure what else has been changed as we have not had to do anything else as of now, but you might want to try and piece it together using 71 and 72 parts. Might be cheaper than using a kit, but I will admit that the kits are pretty cool, and they have everything you need. Good luck.

Your 70 should use all the same parts I used on my 67 C-10 - 6 lug . All Moog parts from Rock auto and CPP parts from Summit for fast free shipping , If you need all the part #'s I have them and it cost a lot less than anyone offers a "kit " for .

2- Moog upper ball joints - K6023

2- Moog lower ball joints - K6024

1- Moog Pitman arm - K6131 -- Power steering

Great, thanks. Do you know the part number for stock height spindles, and do any other parts need to change if using stock height spindles?

What about calipers? Does this setup use 71-72 calipers, pads, proportioning valve, etc? Do you have a list of these other parts that will be necessary?

Does the existing master cylinder from the drum/drum setup work if it's in good shape, or should that be replaced?

Personally I would look at local craigslist are market place for a 71/72 complete front end to swap it into it.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Well . Then your just replacing drum brake junk with disc brake junk that would probably need to be rebuilt / replaced / degreased / painted . All you would be gaining is a set of used disc spindles so no great gain there .

There's something to be said for new parts when your rebuilding steering and brakes .

Gotta agree with Grumpy on this one. I am replacing all the wear parts in my front end, including the springs. Going with 2 1/2" drop spindles while I am at it but all bushings, ball joints, tie rods, etc. will be new.

I have the spindles, calibers, and entire steering connection from a 73 but when I decided to go with drop spindles it made all that not desirable any longer.

Disc brake dust shields came from ebay $39.00 for the pair was the best deal I found on them and the bearing dust caps came from Autozone for a few bucks .

I don't think 71/72 is junk sir. First off he ask for recommendations. Kits are expensive and hard to find ones that work as you your self stated. 71/72 disc front ends are cheap and you get the parts that will work and not have to spend months on hunting parts. I was giving the OP another option. Your comment was not needed at all sir. This board is for info, not to insult people for giving info are their opinions.
If the original parts on these trucks are junk as you say, then why is it there are still so many on the road today with the original parts. Your comment was totally un called for.

Andy , Maybe your misunderstanding what I ment by "junk" I wasn't saying 71-72 parts are junk I was trying to convey that 50 year old parts would probably need to be replaced after surviving 50 years on a truck that spent the better part of it's life working as a truck . and not a restored hot rod . Plain and simple we all have our own way of rebuilding these old trucks to suit our own needs . That's it nothing more . I plan on pushing mine to it's limits and within it's capabilities and really wouldn't consider using old steering and brake components to do it . To each their own .
