what would you pay for a rust-free cab

So, I'm looking to cut down on time (and a couple of other reasons/issues with my present cab) and am considering buying a rust-free cab.

I guess these things are either getting restored or they're all picked over as I'm not coming up with much, but might have found one.

What's a good price for one? What's the max you'd pay for one?

I'm expecting it to be somewhat pricey, but I also don't want to overpay.

[I can fix the one i have, but as I say, I think there may be a structural issue with it and I'm not sure I want to deal with it].

There is quite a difference between a original rust free cab and a rust free cab. The original rust free cab without damage is rare but obtainable. Now a Big Block A/C Bucket seat cab with no rust is worth whatever the seller wants. 67 Small Back window, 67 Panoramic Big Block A/C (yes they made some), Cabs with A/C, Headliner, Cargo light.
See where I'm going with this.
Correctly repaired cabs are also valuable if the work is done right but how do you know? You know by doing your homework and by careful inspection. Do the doors fit? If they don't are they too far out to adjust? Break out your magnet, if the seller is real they won't mind.
So...back to your original question. 70 Chevy non BB, non A/C rust free original with minimum dings and dents $1200 to $1800. A orig rust free 70 BB A/C Buckets, headliner, cargo light with doors attached 3.5 to 4K.
This is my opinion based on todays market and availability.
I'm sure other's have different numbers based on location also.
The bottom line is what are you building and to what level, that will determine your budget. If you want to build something nice you need to start with something nice.

I'd consider what you'd have to pay a shop to fix one. An original rust free is worth more. In AZ it's actually possible to find one. If you can I'd say 2-5K depending on condition and options. As mentioned a fully trimmed bucket AC cab is going to be spendy. A base rust free cab maybe not so bad.

For that much coin, you can buy all the repair panels you need, plus a new welder to burn 'em in!

I bought a cab 3 years ago this spring from a guy in PA that travels and finds stuff for our trucks. Needs outer rockers, a small floor patch and all 4 cab supports, no title and I paid 1300. I've also seen them in Texas for 1500 and not need that much work, and with how ****ty these panels fit, I'd of much rather spent 2-500 more to do minimal repair.

Original post does not really state how bad the one you have is. Really not much to these things and patch panels are not that difficult to find. Yeah, its easier to spend a weekend swapping stuff over, but everyone knows that not how projects usually end up working out. Also what is your end game and your skill level. Heck, AZ weather pretty much allows you to work outside on stuff all year, If you don't mind some heat.

This is a very interesting topic to me , I buy parts every now and then from a gentleman ,It was the third or fourth time I went to buy 69 c10 short step all original one owner truck from him for parts, after we made the deal he said would you like to see something really nice ,of course I said yes , we walked over to a enclosed car trailer he opened the side door to it and there sat a 1972 c10 ochre and white cab , doors fenders and hood , And let me tell you it was show room condition, just amazing to look at , he then told me that he had owned a body shop/ towing company back in the 60s and 70s and this 72 c10 was towed to his shop, the truck was broad sided in the passenger side bed side by someone who ran a red light, the truck was 2 months old and had 800 miles on it and he did not get in to all the specific details but but he managed to buy the truck , I know for I can get this cab, doors hood and fenders , because he has mentioned to me the last time we spoke he kinda hinted , I do not want to insult him by a low ball offer and screw up my parts connection with either . but really how the hell can you come up with a price on parts with 800 miles on them .

Wow, I got my truck for $1300 just three years ago... I guess I got lucky because I got a cab with some rusty rocker panels and a running truck underneath. I'll keep my eye out for an extra cab now...

69Tom, so based on the issues, it seems like replacement panels are probably not the option desired and a fairly fresh cab is the preferred. Did some quick Craiglist searching and came up blank, at least in the Phoenix and Tucson area. Gonna PM you some info.

Not to upset anybody but I got lucky and found a 67 small window non A/C cab last summer for $500 in amazingly good shape. Even the seam sealer around the rain channel isn't cracked.

I have a 68 GMC 3500 with an excellent cab and front clip with updated front disc and hydro- boost brakes and a small block with SM465 trans. Just needs finishing and has a clean title for 2,200.... Had it on Craigslist for over 3 months and not one looker! They are out there but you have to look.

Well I bought a new body cart today, so that's a start. Haha. Yep, I will keep looking.

I too had no idea they had gotten so expensive, but if the demand is high, then it's not surprising.

The sad reality of these trucks is that for the most part, they are worth more in pieces than they are whole.

I have financed my last two builds by buying up abandoned projects, keeping the parts I need and parting out the rest for a nice little profit.

Most of these old trucks and cars these days are worth more in parts because of the availability of original rust free vehicles.

He needed some cash and wasn’t really far into his project, so I got lucky too. The cab has one small patch in the floor about 2x3 inches.
