My problem is my reverse lights come on in between neutral and reverse. I tried moving the safety switch to get it in line but it's not able to move anymore. also the truck is able to start in park and drive.
truck: 1972 chevy c20 engine 350 trans turbo350 neutral safety switch on the column non-tilt column

Install new switch then adjust and tighten up. Cheap and easy to do.

This link may help look at post 8. It is possible that your switch is not installed on the column properly. Or you may have the incorrect linkage on your transmission. Meaning that the switches range of movement isn't synchronized with the range of movement of the shifter input shaft on the transmission.

Re: i need help figuring out my neutral safety switch and reverse lights
If your NSS starts in reverse and drive than the wiring may have been bypassed. The purple wire that runs the starter solenoid is most likely bypassed.
I would suggest to get a replacement from GMC Pauls. They are made exactly in the same place the originals were. Here in the US. I have had to replace a couple of them now, I did not get them from GMC Pauls. |

Re: i need help figuring out my neutral safety switch and reverse lights
Toolboxchevy brought up a good point the switch may have been bypassed in the past. Likely the plug has a jumper of some kind. It could look fine but have a piece of wire or a paper clip jammed in it.
