General maintenance and seals

Hi all, I am sure this information is available by a search but I was hoping to get all I need in one order and can't find a complete list.

This winter I plan to pull the motor (327) on my 68 C-20 with a quadrajet on it.

I want want to replace all seals and generally check everything while it's out. I have leaks in different places and want to stop them all. I started a list and if anyone happens to have part numbers or something I should add to the list, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, where is best place to order it all from (Rock Auto seems pretty good for stock parts but shipping is an issue.

Thanks for taking the time.
Rear diff fluid and gasket - looks like Eaton HO52 or HO72 (not sure how to tell the difference
3 qts 85-90W gear oil

Change oil and filter - WIX 51143 cartridge - 5 qts 15-40W oil

Change transmission fluid and filter
Transmission pan gasket
GMTH400 Super max filter with steel or brass screen
6 Qts ATF

Oil pan and one piece gasket (Part number for gasket?)
Rear main seal (part number?)
Valve cover gaskets (part number Felcro?)
Timing chain gasket (part number?)
Front crank seal?? (part number)
Input shaft seal?
Tail shaft seal?

How to resolve leaks at speedo connection?

What did I miss for fluids?
I have no power brakes, already flushed lines and replaced fluid in manual brakes.
No power steering.

Re: General maintenance and seals

Check bushings in a arms and rear trailing arms.
maybe replace shocks
check drive shaft carrier bearing

And I found Rock Auto to be cheaper on most everything but their shipping put them more expensive then summit. Put your list together with RA prices and have Summit price match.

Re: General maintenance and seals

Thanks Don, I already have the carrier bearing and will check all bushings etc.

Anyone have a parts list and am I on track for what you would do if you go through the trouble of pulling the motor?

Also looking for any "gotchas". I am handy but certainly not a mechanic and not at the experience level of the folks on this board!

Re: General maintenance and seals

I'm just starting to do this too, so I'm interested in replies as well. Its very easy to snowball out of control picking parts, but I'm sticking with the thought that it's just a freshening up and most of what's there is good enough. So I'm changing ALL gaskets and other parts that are good to change while the engine is out. So water pump, oil pump, freeze plugs, timing chain, cam, valve seals.

Re: General maintenance and seals

Same idea that I have. I want it to be something I do once and never again (I am almost 63 years old so that is not all that long. LOL).

I want the truck to have no leaks and nothing that is going to break down. I know there can always be something for a truck this old, but it only has 48K miles on it and in great shape so it's just the things to do now while it's out.

Re: General maintenance and seals

Helpful video, thanks. I am sure mine needs to be done. Maybe just to that now, one less thing to do later. Change tranny fluid and filter at the same time.
