Ever use Rain-X and have problems?

I like the idea that Rain-X could make use of wipers unnecessary in a lot of rains. So, I bought some and tried it. When I wasn't satisfied with what it was doing, I turned on the wipers. After a little bit, the wipers would start hopping and skipping (sounds like fun, huh?) across the windshield. So, I knew that my application technique was suffering.

Before you start to apply Rain-X, put something on the glass and watch how it slides down, from top to bottom, of the windshield.
Then, clean the glass, per the instructions.
Before you apply the Rain-X, also use 4-ought (0000) steel wool and then clean it again before you apply the Rain-X.
After you have applied the Rain-X per the instructions, and it is ready for use, put the same item on the glass that you did before you cleaned the glass and watch it now.

I did this before driving to Florida, knowing that a hurricane was brewing in the Gulf. As I was leaving Pensacola, headed to Tampa, the rain began. We were near DeFuniak Springs, FL. We proceeded to drive, in a driving rain, with very little use of the wipers....maybe once every 3-4 minutes....just because. It was amazing! Folks had their wipers running on high. We just breezed on down the highway and were entertained by the droplets as they moved up the glass.

When I was 17 I had an old VW bus the wipers didn't work on. I used Rain-X and could drive in just about any kind of rain you would want to drive a VW bus in. As long as it is applied properly it works great. I liked it, but I haven't used it in the last 15+ years.

I have used it on all my vehicles. I run it on the 67 because the wipers are not on it. Great stuff!

I like rain-x and used to use on my truck, but when I recently had a birthday I got a whole basket of goodies including Prestones Rain Relief. While I thought that this was the cheap stuff, it wasn't! this stuff works 2X better than rain-x could hope for.

I've used rain-x and the quick spray on while the window is wet stuff. They work for a while but cause the wipers to hop if the window isn't wet. My experience is that the wipers also wear down quicker, like the rain-x is coating them and they don't seal against the windshield properly. Now, I only use it in emergencies.

I love the stuff... It workes better the more you apply. I think it even works better the harder you get pounded with rain.

What really wierd is that the windshield washer replacement kind only works where the windshield wipers cover. I guess that that is where it is "rubbed in" or something. But it's neat because you can see immediately what the difference is between the treated part and the untreated part.

I've had a bit of wiper chatter too but the pros far far outweigh the cons and even more so for vehicles that don't have intermittent wipers.

I've used Rain-x on a multitude of vehicles ever since it came out--what, 20 years ago? Never had any problem of any kind. Just follow directions.

It works great in a heavy rain if you're going fast, like highway speed. In a misting rain, it doesn't seem to do much, & it makes the wipers smear.

My wipers "hop" too sometimes. Guess I'll have to try the steel wool thing. Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, Rain-X is all I've used. I am sure that using the 0000 Steel wool will work on any glass that you want to clean, whether or not it's overspray, acid rain spots or other chemical spots, or when cleaning glass for Rain-X or other such substance. The 4-ought grade hasn't scratched any glass that I have used it on. Coarser grades may, if you are too energetic.

A little OT, but try it on shower doors, patio doors. Makes the dog snot wipe off easier too.
