4x4 vs 2wd v8 engine position.

Does anyone know how much farther back a 4wd v8 is from a 2wd. My 69 2wd was originally a 250 i6 truck. It now has a 350 crate in it using the i6 mounts so it’s pushed back toward the firewall. I’ve been told this is the same position that 4wd trucks have their v8s. I’m installing a 700r4 so instead of cutting the driveshaft, I have a set of 2wd v8 mount I could install if the change is around 3 inches. I’ll just pull the engine and swap the mounts. It will give me an excuse to repaint the engine as well. Thanks fellas

The original driveshaft might fit, mine did.

The holes in the frame are already drilled for forward or rearward mounting. The V8 did mount in the rear set of holes for a 4 wd. The holes measure 2 5/8" apart.

The 4x4 uses a completely different crossmember setup so it's not really an apples to apples. I will measure my 69 short step from hei cap to firewall and same on the Jimmy project. I would say it is more than 3".

Will see if that is correct or not!

On my two sample trucks, on the Jimmy, the top of the plug wires where the HEI retainer attaches are touching the firewall. On the C10 it is 4" from firewall to the plug boot.

Not the most precise way to measure but best I can do. Also a very small sample size of just one 4x4 and one 2x4 small V8 truck. YMMV.

Well , I set my crate engine on the back set of holes and the dizzy was tight against the firewall . So I moved mine forward . I had to have a new drive shaft made no matter what , so For me it worked out and my dizzy is a whole lot easier to get at.

My truck is a K1500 GMC

Thanks guys. This helps. I pulled the v8 engine mounts off to set on top of each other for a comparison on my truck later today. If the gap was 4 inches like mentioned above I wonder if the yoke would have an extra inch and be fine in the 700. But if the mounting holes are only 2 and 5/8th difference then it may be too short. Unless the yoke is not fully seated in my th350 right now.

If I remember correctly,(it was 20 years ago) I think on my 67 I used the same drive shaft. I originally had the small block on the 6cyl mounts with a short th350. With the 700r4 I used the v8 mounts. If I ever do it again, I will keep everything as far back as I can and cut the driveshaft. These trucks are very nose heavy.

Was your th350 27 5/8th in length?

Honestly I cant remember. It was the short tail stock version. 6 inch tail stock. I have one in the back of the shop but its really buried right now and I cant get to it to measure. The 9 inch tail stock version is almost the same length as the 700r4. So if you have that one your lengths wont change much.
