Possible blown gasket?

Hey everyone! So I’ve finally got my truck to a decent running status but I’ve noticed it burns alittle oil and I have white smoke when I pop the hood after running it or driving. I think I have a blown gasket as I see oil seeping from the top of the engine. I believe I have the 292 I6 and have attached a photo of the issue.

How many quarts per 1000 miles, or per 100 miles do you lose?

Your PCV filter tube that should have been connected to the air cleaner housing is just capped off because of that (sorry to say it) cheesy little air filter. I'd recommend getting the correct air cleaner housing and filter or at least getting a larger housing that has the filter in it so that the PCV valve can pull the fumes out of your crank case. You will also have better performance if you lose that little filter setup, and won't have to change the filter as often. Until you get the other half of the system working, there will always be oil leaking and causing smoke. If the PCV system could pull some air, that oil wouldn't (potentially) be dripping out. There should be a hose up to the air cleaner housing from the connector that is currently plugged off.

Gotta pile on and agree that getting the proper air cleaner and connecting up the PCV properly should be the first order of business. After that, you can see if that improves the situation enough to be tolerable.

Thanks everyone Ill get more pics after work. Yea thats on my list as well the previous owners handy work unfortunately. Im looking at getting the correct housing and filter. I'm not sure how much it burns as its been an ongoing project with little road time but I do notice it seeps quite a bit after turning it over and letting it idle.

Sounds good.

If you don't have any crankcase ventilation it will cause pressure buildup in the engine and force oil out at any weak spots in your gaskets. Have you tried tightening up the valve cover bolts? Don't get too carried away on them or you might twist them off. Just snug them up.

JFYI that’s not a 292.
292 has taller side covers and the fuel pump is behind the motor mount.
I’ve seen people use a chrome breather to replace that plugged line on the side of your valve cover.

Actually looks pretty good.

You do have crankcase ventilation and it looks like a PCV valve in the hose that goes from the top of the valve cover to the intake manifold. You may need a few pieces but I don't think it will be to hard to get it figured out.

That, and also the PCV suction side might be clogged, because even if it had a lot of blow-by, if the PCV suction side was working it shouldn't be leaking. Might be a valve cover removal operation in the future. Remember that guy (drawing a blank on his name- SteveninTexas?) that had the baffles in the valve cover that were messed up?
