Help please with 4L80, column shift, and headers

I’m putting a 6.2 liter L94 and 4L80 in my 68. I want a column shift. I was told long or mid length headers would not work with column shift but that I could possibly use the Lokar cable linkage. But I just saw on the Lokar website that the cable linkage does not work on 4L80. So I’m back to square one. Do I need to just use shorty headers? Any other options.

Scroll down on the Lokar site and you will find the cable selector type...it will fit the 4l80E so long as the trans has the short style selector shaft...

Thanks, how do I tell if my trans has the short or long style selector shaft?

Short shaft trans have the trans lever less than an inch from edge of trans...long shaft trans have the lever about 2" from the pan edge...

Long shaft transmissions have the neutral start / reverse light switch directly on the trans,,,early short shaft trans dont have those mount points.

Thanks, I've got the long shaft option so I guess the cable won't work.

Re: Help please with 4L80, column shift, and headers

I don't know about mid length or long-tube, but I have shorty headers with the universal rod linkage and works fine. Not as smooth as a modern vehicle with cable linkage, but fine for a 1968 truck. Just no slamming it through the gears.

Is that with a column shifter?

Re: Help please with 4L80, column shift, and headers

i used the universal lokar shift linkage on 2 swaps on my 65 and 61 . Long tube headers on my 65 , newer style 72 gm tilt column on both. 4l80e and 4l60e . I just had to bend the shift linkage rod abit to line it up with with the column lever and the tranny shift lever .

Re: Help please with 4L80, column shift, and headers

I know when you look at the path between the shift arm and the shaft on the transmission, there are probably some wires or oil lines or fuel line that makes it look impossible, but it's a small rod and can be bent to follow the path you want.

You can swap out the long shaft for a short shaft, but you will ten need to work up Neutral Start and Reverse Lights systems
