Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
Trying to decide which column to go with. I kinda like the originality of the no tilt. What you guys think?

I appreciate having a tilt column, and they’re an original option.

X2... and a nice addition if your truck wasn't ordered with tilt.

Pretty sure 70 was the first year offered in the 67-72 trucks.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I'm a big fan of originality, but unless you are restoring one back to 100% factory stock, I say YES, it's a nice feature, and a natural fit.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I think it has to do with your physical build. My non tilt falls right where I want it. If you are thinking of selling it someday it's a good feature to have.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I weight 150lb, slender build. I'm happy with where the non-tilt in the truck falls now and i'm worried I won't like the beefier column of the tilt. Thats why i'm leaning toward the non-tilt....

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I have a tilt column in my truck and it's nice, but for what I have into it between the purchase price and rebuilding it, I could have spent that money on something else and been fine with a non tilt column. One thing that's nice about it is that since I have power steering, I can run a smaller steering wheel and tilt It for an easy, comfortable reach. Who am I kidding, my tilt is awesome! You need one!

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
Forgot to mention, if you want an ORIGINAL, fully restored GM truck tilt from that era, plan on spending about $500. If so, do yourself a favor and buy one already done from Randy or one of the guys here on the board that do them all the time. There are a thousand pieces in them things and it's easy to screw it up trying to put everything back together again. Plus it requires some special tools that are very hard to find.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I sell a lot of tilts and some non tilts.
Mostly restored columns but some nice used and fully serviced. The tilts are built better and are just stronger columns. For that reason alone I recommend the tilt column over the non tilt. Send me a PM if you need a column or column advice. |

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
X2 what Steve said...I first tried a CPP tilt and didn't like it. I sold it and got a rebuilt GM truck tilt from Les (70shortfleet) and love it. I run the original steering wheel, so the tilt makes it nice for others.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I want to move the tilt steering column closer to the dash. Can I get a shorter column or should I get a 33 inch and collapse the steering shaft a little. If I can get a shorter steering column what size should I get, I have seen them as short as 28 inches? It’s going into my 68 c10 longbed fleetside. Sorry but this is my first truck..

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
The collapsible portion of the Column is a safety feature in the event of front end collision.
Does anybody address this issue when moving Column towards dash. Should the collapsible section be pulled apart shortened redrilled and reinstalled .I believe that is what was done to my suburban When installing a 4 peed tilt column. |

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
On my 68 project I used an Ididit tilt column. Worked well. I'm 6'2" and about 215 lbs. Pic of the interior.

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
there is no "beefier" to a tilt, they're virtually the same, if not exactly the same. A tilt is a non-tilt until you want to change the position of the steering wheel.

I like the originality of the non-tilt...I kind of side with Jay Leno in regards to tilt columns in a classic vehicle :

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
I have a couple of 70-72 tilt columns, but I find the angle of the fixed column is perfect for me. Now a square body truck with a fixed column is absolutely in the wrong place, so tilt is near mandatory!

Re: Tilt or no tilt on my steering column?
The only time I've ever moved a tilt wheel is to provide more room to get under the dash. While driving they have always been straight. Thus I vote no tilt. It's an unnecessary expense.
