hatch rattles when closing - is there an adjustment?

I now have a hatch that opens and closes using the handle and does not stick when opening/closing using the stock arms.

I do notice that the hatch does rattle slightly when closed (as I can pull on the handle and the hatch moves a bit still). I'd like to remedy this so it shuts, latches and is snug against the rest of the top. Can anybody share what adjustments I need to make at each latch area to tighten this up?

Thanks!

Do you have these little "stoppers" in place? As you can see, they're located on the top bolt of the latch retainer.

Hopefully, that's all you need.

I have those and have adjusted them on both sides - no change to the rattle. Maybe I need to revisit those as I would imagine they would 'press out' on the hatch while the latch is held - reducing the chance for rattling.

Thanks for the reply.

I’ve seen some latch mechanisms and striker plates that were awfully grooved and I imagine would contribute to rattle. Are the gaskets fresh?

Is the hatch closing all the way until you hear the second click?

The hatches on Blazers, at least on my 72, latch closed similar to how car doors and modern car hoods close; close it softly and it will catch but it is not fully closed. Close it with more force and it will close properly.

Try this; Close the hatch as you normally would until it catches and won't open without turning the handle. Then, using the palm of your hand, push with more force on lower corners of the hatch until you hear a second click.

If you don't hear a click then the catch mounted on the removable top may need to be adjusted so the hatch closes properly so it does not rattle.

The latch (removable top side) on mine is packed out (toward the handle) with washers. I can only assume this was done to adjust the latch to get it to close properly.

Re: hatch rattles when closing - is there an adjustment?

Fixed it with help from you all. Needed to add shims in 2 spots to resolve:
  • between rubber foot and top
  • between hatch bolt cover and hatch

Now it clicks shut and doesn't bounce or rattle when closed.

Thank you!
