New cabs

Stumbled on this site the other day. I wasn't sure if you guys had seen this before (search didn't return any results) so I thought i'd share!

https://mrc10.com/product-category/1...gm-truck-cabs/

Thoughts? It may save some of us in the long run!

Re: New cabs

The one pic looks good, but that's too rich for my blood. I'd rather buy a nice, full truck for that price.

Re: New cabs

I wondered when they’d start producing them for these trucks. Man that’s a lot of money though.

Re: New cabs

Just like pretty much any other part, the repos aren't going to be nearly as nice as the real thing. And considering the price, and the number of originals still out there, I'd say it's going to be a long time before people are standing in line to buy one.

Re: New cabs

Hypothetically speaking, a customer rolls into my shop with something that needs rockers, cab corners, floors, drip rails, cowl and who knows what other areas and I can suck $12g up in labor in no time flat. These just like many other panels become an option versus trolling the internet looking for that so called rust free cab, which still would require stripping, possibly some repair before you are even ready to begin reassembly.

Re: New cabs

I'd say cost is less a factor than quality. Typically, the repos are thinner material, stampings aren't exact, and assembly leaves much to be desired. You can burn through 12k pretty easily getting a repo squared and straight, fixing door and panel gaps, etc. I have 29, 32 and 34 Fords and have dealt with those extensively for a long time. I don't know anyone who was happy they started with a repo body vs an original. They certainly didn't save any money doing so, and when it comes time to sell, the value isn't even close no matter how nice it is or what it cost.

Re: New cabs

Holy Moses!!!! That doesn't make Randall's crew cabs seem like a bad price at $15k bare no glass. Which is still too high IMO but I'm too cheap to spend that much on a cab or body shell.

I see no saving money there. I'm into restoration and am more than willing to use my free labor to save money. Plus, you can buy four decent rust free cabs for that kind of money. This hobby is going to the rich. This ole blue collar boy needs to start restoring Cadillacs

Something to think about, that cab that’s 12k includes doors also. Not sure what the overall quality and fit is like but does help a little.

Tim,... I’m in Missouri and need a 69-72 rust free cab.
There are none in this state for sale.
I would give good money for oem metal, but finding one is impossible.

How rust free and how far do you want to travel to get one?

I’ve found a few decent ones in Ark and in KS lately.

Arrow Re: New cabs

I don't have an unlimited budget and am fortunate to have pretty good truck sheet metal wise so I have no real interest in buying a new cab. However I do see a real advantage of buying a whole new cab. All new metal and epdm coating so it should remain rust free for many years. No matter how much media blasting one does you just cannot reach all the areas to clean the rust out in between the layers spot welded together and rust will inevitably come back through at some time in the future.
With the bad reputation import sheet metal has it's natural to expect poor fit and finish with these new cabs too but unless we know of anyone who has actually purchased one of these new cabs we don't know how well it fits. The cost of these new cabs is up there but the cleaning and repair of old sheet metal is right up there too plus as said some time in the future the rust will return in hard to reach areas requiring another repair/rebuild down the road.
So I would like to hear from someone who has actually purchased one of these new cabs and get their first hand review.

There are plenty that need rust repair.
I just thought if there were plenty of RUST FREE cabs out there I would like one to use in a project of mine.

I would travel to any surrounding state.
I’d pay to have one shipped, but that’s taking a big chance.

So many listed as rust free, have already had repairs done.
I’m looking for an original paint cab and doors.

Re: New cabs

What would a complete rust free cab with doors from a low mileage wrecked 72 Highlander truck be worth ? I have said truck and long bed that I plan to one day fix but If there is more value in parts I may have to consider it . It needs a new frame which I also have access to .

Re: New cabs

I think it’s pretty cool that someone was able to engineer (reverse engineer?) this process. No doubt that was not easy or cheap.

No doubt there’s a small market out there.

Re: New cabs

To really get people interested I would mount the "new cab and doors" on stock straight frame and then add the best aftermarket front sheet metal and see how everything fits. Then add an aftermarket box to see if all body lines match.
To add perspective people buy aftermarket frames starting at over $13000.

Bill White, in SE Iowa had a superb white 72 cab and front clip for sale. It is an AC cab with all the AC stuff there, and a tilt. Nice black bench seat, wood grain inserts in the door panels, and all there. No dents, pretty exceptional for a mid west truck. He told me $5k for it back in February. It was just more than I wanted to spend without the rest of a truck attached to it.

My opinion is there are pretty much no rust free cabs. Maybe no rust visible but nothing rust free. There's always the VIN issue on a replacement.

Here's a link. Probably a bit far but give it a click.
I've seen some amazingly good stuff from southern OK, so you might check OK city and south CL for grins.
