Put the new newly gapped spark plugs in the 72 yesterday, it has that HEI. It still seems to a little sluggish. should I change the advance on it.

Or should my question be: What should I do?

If it is a used HEI there are a few things to check. HEI's have so much power they have a nasty habit of firing right thru the rotor cap, especialy cheap no-name ones. This will reak havit on the advance mechinizm. To check for this, simply remove the cap and rotor. If the advance parts are rust colored,you have the problem. Check the advance parts and make sure they are all free. Lube them up while you are there. I have seen HEI's with the advance welded at full advance from this problem. Also check the springs, sometimes they are weak and will not pull the weights back. GOOD LUCK

Hi...are you using an advance type timing light?..is the vacuum hooked up to full manifold port?..alot of times the timing mark on the dampner has shifted....try advancing until you get a ping under load..then back off a little....then check your timing..see whwere your at....then if still not good.....try what tom suggested..if you suck on the vacuum hose ..with the cap off..you should see the plate rotate..if not it ...change the vacuum module

Got new vac. before I put it in.

I think the springs might be weak will change them. this was a used HEI (junk, no salvage yard brand) but it is a GM- casting #'s.
The advance parts were rusty looking but I oiled them real good b4 I put it in.
